Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Johnson's Head to Toe

I've noticed that after using Johnson's head to toe baby soap, my daughter gets cradle cap. I rinse it out thoroughly, so I know that's not the problem. Could it be an allergic reaction? We use the bedtime bath from them and there's no problem!

What soaps do you use?

  • Baby Bees (by Burts Bees).  My LO has SUPER sensitive skin, and does great with it.
  • You could be using too much. Babies really only need a dime sized amount of wash. I find that when my husband bathes her he uses too much and she ends up with dry flaky skin, too.

  • We use Dr. Bronner's. It's all natural, fair trade, and very mild to the skin. J&J has loads of chemicals in it. I know they had until this year to remove a lot of their carcinogens and crap in it. This is a great database to pick good and safe baby products:

  • Aveeno baby unscented.  Doesn't smell nearly as nice as the Johnson afterwards but it was rated as a lot healthier for babies, not the healthiest but healthier and easy find in stores.

  • We use Aveeno.  I was all ready to be a Johnson & Johnson family but the Head to Toe wash gave LO a rash.  So I switched to Aveeno - no issues.  We use the Aveeno body wash & shampoo and the bedtime bath one.  I also use their Aveeno baby lotions - the one with oatmeal works great on DDs red cheeks.
  • It's definitely possible. We got tons of Burt's Bees wash from our baby showers (it's all I registered for), and DS had an allergic reaction to it... little bumps all over his skin for weeks. We switched to the Aveeno oatmeal stuff and haven't had problems since. It's worth a try!

  • We use the Target Up & Up version of Johnson's and we have no issues.

  • We have used California Baby for the first 10 months and no dry skin.  This past week I wanted to mix it up, bored of one scent, so I picked up some Shea Moisture and so far it is good too.
  • Johnson and Johnson is no good. I use babyganics and California baby. I only let 100% natural touch my son's skin.
  • hmmm, maybe this is our issue too. LO head is always really dry and flakey and I just thought she had really dry skin. The pedi told me to rub some baby oil on her head after a bath, but then she doesn't have the soft fluffy hair.  I think I'll try something else and see if that helps

And what is babyganics's  natural source of Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate?  It's good to want the best for your baby, but be careful you look into what you are buying and don't just buy hype.

For the most part, soap is soap.

My son has severe eczema. I've done my research and I found those 2 brands don't irritate his skin. If all soap was the same he wouldn't have a reaction to other brands.
  • We don't use J&J in our home...BabyGanics only!

  • I just found that the head to toe didn't wash well, like his hair would still look a little greasy. We usually use the bedtime wash with the reg yellow j&j baby shampoo.

  • We use Dove Sensitive Skin on our LO. She has eczema and our allergist recommended it.

  • I wont use J&J products. (or California Baby either because they changed their formulas). We use Susan Brown's Baby sensitive foaming shampoo & body wash. Love it and it doesn't irritate our sensitive LO.

For the scalp I swear by the Bean B Clean brush (can find on Amazon). We had cradle cap once and that brush eliminated it completely and it hasn't come back. Makes LOs scalp clean and shine like a new penny. We use it once a week now as maintenance.
