May 2014 Moms

Ugh, you will not believe this.

Okay, so I just HAVE to vent about this. There is an acquaintance that I am "friends" with on Facebook. Without going into detail - because I could go on for HOURS - this dude is crazy-ass whack job. Over the top business man who is constantly trying to push his agenda on people. He just announced last night that he and his wife are expecting their first child in September. I side-eyed him making the announcement so early, but I understand that people get excited and have a hard time holding it in.

Then, not an hour later, this post appears from him (copying and pasting - removing name): Let's start the pool. I'm taking bets. $1 per name or 6 guesses for $5. First names only. I've got to start saving up for this baby that's due in 7 months (early September). It's 2014 and ain't nothing cheap when it comes to baby stuff!!

I just...ugh. I can't. It's taking everything I have to not post something about how ridiculously tacky this is!

  • Beb was due in early September and we announced on FB in early February.  :-S

If he's joking, its a dumb joke but he probably thought it was really clever and funny.
If he's serious, well, then he's an idiot.

People are actually starting to respond with name guesses! It is seriously baffling to me! One person said something along the lines of "that's what baby showers are for, you don't need a whole lot for the first few months, try rummage sales, etc". The only thing that's keeping me from saying something is that I haven't actually spoken with him for almost 2 years. His posts are so annoying to me that I unsubscribed to him. DH was the one who actually saw the post and told me about it.

I'm sorry - didn't mean to offend! I think why it bothered me so much is that everything he does I find just grating and annoying. If anyone else I know had announced early I don't think it would have bothered me at all.

I don't think he's joking, unfortunately. This same couple openly asked for cash on Facebook as a wedding gift so they could pay for their honeymoon instead of forking over the cash themselves. They have money to be able to do/pay for what they want, but are so obsessed with saving that they do stuff like this.

  • So tacky! I hope he was kidding.
  • Yeah we announced at 8.5 weeks after the first u/s. We tried to hold it in but didn't. We actually told family and close friends right when we found out at 4 weeks. So I can't and wouldn't judge there.

But the name money pull thing is ridiculous.

  • Ughhhhhhhh. Yeah, like @LunaBug924 said, if you can't afford kids, don't have them. It doesn't sound like that's the actual problem there though; sounds like he's just a greedy, shameless idiot. Breastfeed, cloth diaper, buy used, and get over it.

  • "I've got to start saving up for this baby that's due in 7 months (early September). It's 2014 and ain't nothing cheap when it comes to baby stuff!!"

To this I would say something like, "If you can't afford a baby, then you should have kept it in your pants."

Seriously, even if this is a joke, it's pretty tacky. You have much more restraint than I do. I wonder what his wife thinks about him posting something like that. I'd be so embarrassed if my DH ever did anything like that. And he tells A LOT of bad jokes. LOL
HIs wife is fine with it - shared it on her page as well. They are both the same when it comes to saving money, so I'm not surprised. They asked friends and family for cash as a wedding gift to pay for their honeymoon and had no shame about doing it.

I think the only reason I haven't said anything is that people are already commenting back with their "bets", which is the most perplexing to me. I just don't feel like saying something where I'll end up getting attacked by all of their pals who apparently don't see anything wrong with it. I'd rather just bitch about it on here. ;)

  • I wonder how many people are actually giving money.

Regardless, this guy sounds like #1 Dad. Way to set the bar high before baby even gets here.

FFSC: we did a birthday pool. Guesses were $5. But the winner got the cash, not me. We all still cool?
Yes! That makes much more sense to me. I have a few friends who did the same thing with the date that the baby would come on, and whoever guessed correctly got the money. I just don't understand why they're doing a name pool? There's a finite number of days in September, but pretty much an infinite number of names that the couple could pick. I have no clue why people would want to be a part of it. So, if they're right and they win, what's in it for them? Bragging rights?

  • Wow- crazy!!

We shared with our first u/s pic on Facebook and told close friends and family after the first appointment confirming we were. Hubby and I are really bad at keeping our own exciting stuff a secret!

So why are you friends with him??! ;)

Ugh, such a long story. He was a weekly guest speaker in my husband's Economics class. One day he told my husband about an educational tour company where teachers could take students abroad for super decent prices. He did all sorts of work to help get the ball rolling, and DH felt like a dick if he didn't let him be a part of the trip. He was super over the top and annoying during the year of planning and meetings with parents and kids, but we were professional. Once we actually got on the trip however, he washed his hands of the students, didn't do anything to engage them, or try to make it a good experience for them. In his mind, he was on vacation and the students did not matter. He and his wife (fiancé at the time) invited along a girl they knew who was homeschooled. She was an amateur photographer, and basically ended up taking their engagement pictures throughout the duration of the trip. Everywhere we went it was all about them making out (in front of students) and posing for pictures. I felt so bad for the girl. Once we got back we did not communicate with him anymore. That is seriously the abridged version of the trip. I could go on and on about how ridiculous he behaved. DH selected other speakers for his class, though once he found out we were in the midst of planning another trip for this summer (that I obviously can't go on now, haha) he tried to weasel his way back in.

Long story short: was never really a friend, more of an acquaintance. I unfollowed him long ago and didn't look at his profile until DH showed me his post from today.

  • Wow! What a douche. Sometimes I enjoy keeping tabs on certain "interesting" people on my FB but this guy sounds like one worth deleting. He's not entertaining you in a good way. Plus maybe if he notices you and your husband deleted him, he'll get the picture and leave you alone in the future.

  • @jennish11: Nope, you read it correctly! That's exactly my point - why on earth would anyone want to participate? Maybe a handful of people would care what the baby's name is, but the majority of (normal) people could care less, so why pony up cash to make a guess? I really don't get it!
