Engorgement

Good lord..safe to say my milk has definitely come in. I am so happy my LO has been nursing so well, but this engorgement business is so uncomfortable. My boobs have reached porn star stage , haha . Anyone have good advice to ease this? Heating pad ? Massage? Should I try my pump?

Re: Engorgement

  • Avoid the pump at all costs! Pumping tells your body that you need that milk to feed baby so it will keep producing that much. Oversupply is no joke. Your best bet is to hand express until you are comfortable.

  • Aside from the significant discomfort that comes along with it, I found the enforcement kind of amusing. Never have I been that large, and I probably never will again.

That being said, my LC said to use heat before a feeding and ice after. Seems to have worked for me!

This!  I made the mistake of pumping to relieve engorgment from my milk coming in and ended up with a crazy ridiculous oversupply.  I will NOT be doing it again.  I was basically making enough milk for 2 babies (kind of a double edged sword actually - I had a great stash when I went back to work).

  • I liked to stand in the shower and let the hot water run on them. It helps with let down and I'd usually hand express while I was in there too.

I second the shower!! It feels sooo good! It does stimulate my supply though so afterwards I do pump about 4-5 ounces.... I'm trying to build a stock pile though!!

  • I agree, a lil hand expression for comfort and but baby to breast as much as possible. Our body's are amazing and reset and adjust as needed for LO but it can literally be a pain in the boob! Ha hope you can get some relief :)
  • Hot shower worked wonders! Also hot compresses help relieve some of the pain ;)
