Messy eaters

DS is such a messy eater. He tries to use his spoon and fork but gives up quickly and just shovels it around with his hands. Food ends up everywhere. I thought this is supposed to get better but it seems to get worse. He plays with his food and just smashes it and wipes it all over. Then he hates getting cleaned up and wiped down. Anyone else? Anything I can do to help this. He starts day care next week and I am worried he is going to be the dirty smelly kid.

Re: Messy eaters

  • We are in the same boat. I see all these videos of kids K's age eating happily with a fork or spoon and not even wearing a bib. When K eats, a bib is a MUST and he eats less than he plays with. He can use his utensils pretty well when he really tries, but rarely wants to. He loves to pick everything up and smash it in his hands and rub it in his hair. Pretty much every meal is like this, even with foods that don't seem that messy.

And he is definitely the messy kid at daycare. When I go pick him up, all the other kids in his class look the same as when they were dropped off and K has stains all over his shirt, drool everywhere (he is so freaking slobbery!!) and crusty food all in his hair that is sticking out every which way. He's a mess.

  • LO is messy at home. She gets food everywhere and all over herself. I let her use a spoon for some things and she makes a huge mess on herself. I figure it is part of learning and she has to develop her coordination. At home I put down a huge piece of fabric under her high chair (basically a table cloth) to catch all the food she gets on the floor. At the end of dinner I roll it up and shake it out back (classy I know). It makes clean up so much easier. The hand washing/wiping the face is hit or miss. Some days she tolerates it and others she has a melt down.
We do go out to eat at restaurants on the weekends. She is much better and does not make as much of a mess. I think the big thing is that she is distracted by all of the people and activity so she has less time to throw things around.
