Inadequate milk supply?

Hello ladies! My baby's two week old and she is a very good eater. And I mean a VERY GOOD eater. She's been gaining weight steadily and art a good rate. She was born 7lbs 7 oz, now she is 8 lbs 10 oz. I'm the happiest mama ever during the day, when she nurses every 3-3.5 hours. She generally gets full. She takes both sides and nurses about 20 min on each side. It used to be where she'd nurse for 20 min and I'd feel my breast still be heavy, now I feel it's completely empty. I'm not sure if that's because the baby is stronger and drinks faster our if it's because my milk supply reduced. Also, she usually wales up around 8 and stay s up till midnight, during that time the majority of the time she wants to eat. After she empties my breasts, again 20 min each. She is still hungry, and I give her my breast again but she's getting frustrated cause it seems like it's empty... I try giving her formula supplement, cause it physically hurts to see my baby's hungry. That's where I run into another problem. She hates bottles. I tried so many... Now I'm waiting on comotomo, thinking maybe it'll work! But anyways, do u guys think it's normal m?y breasts are empty after 20 min on each side? Should I try to increase my milk supply? In my situation, how would u do it?

Re: Inadequate milk supply?

  • I think it sounds normal too. My lo eats constantly in the evening leading up to bed time. I just park myself on the couch and nurse nurse nurse.

Your breasts don't need to feel full/heavy to have milk. I would suggest stopping the formula and just let your lo nurse as much as she wants. Baby's are cranky at night and they like comfort. They get that comfort from you. If she is especially cranky nurse her skin too skin.

  • The other thing to remember is that you are headed into the three week growth spurt. So your lo will want too nurse more. U had one growth spurt (at 6 weeks) where he just nursed constantly for two days. I didn't get off tge couch for 7 hrs. It was exhausting but it was fine as quickly as it started.

The more you nurse your body will respond and produce more .
