AW-We got our first permanent placements!!!

As some of you know we are licensed foster parents and have been waiting for kids to come into our home.  We wanted to stay with young children since we are having a child of our own and wanted them all close in age.  We got the call Friday asking if we would take a placement of a 2 year old and a 5 month old, both little girls.  We jumped at the opportunity and said yes right away!  The case worker did warn us that the family was very transient and was going to be difficult to locate, so we hoped for the best.  We spent Saturday running errands, picking up diapers, formula and a few odds and ends stuff that we didn't already have.  Then we waited, and waited.  We got a phone call from the Country Children Services at 10:30pm the girls were at the intake center and being evaluated by a social worker and nurse.  We were told to pick them up around midnight.  We arrived very nervous and excited for the journey to come.  We had to wait a little while, but we finally got to meet both girls.  They are bi-racial, beautiful little girls.  Both are good weights and don't appear to be malnourished.  The toddler took to me right away and has become my little buddy.  The baby is super good and is a chunker!  We got them home and in bed around 2am.  Considering they were just taken out of their home and with total strangers the night went perfect.  We read a few stories, then tucked them in and both went to sleep pretty easily.  The baby woke around 530 am, drank a bottle and went right back to sleep.  I got up with her, fed her downstairs and slept on the couch while she slept in the pack n play.  I let my wife sleep until 930 when the baby woke up again.  I woke up the toddler so she didn't sleep all day and we are hoping to get her to take a good nap this afternoon.  We really couldn't ask for an easier 12 first hours.  My wife cooked us a yummy breakfast of eggs, bacon (I was totally craving it) and toast.  As we sat at the table with the toddler (while the baby was sleeping) we just looked at one another and smiled.  We asked the toddler if she liked the food and she said yes and "thank you".  We both teared up and realized that our dreams have come true.  We both have dreamed of being parents, made the decision to become foster parents and it has all come true for us.
We have a ton of arranging and organizing to get done today.  Talk about instant family!  We are just elated and a little scared.  So if you all wouldn't mind sending positive vibes our way.  This is not going to be easy, but we are up for the challenge.

    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255
    1st ultrasound (3/6  6w 1d): TWINS!!!! Twin A measuring 6w1d with a heartbeat of 118bpm. Twin B measuring 6w0d with a heartbeat of 113bpm.

***July 18, 2014 we lost our beautiful babies at 21 weeks gestation. They were born too early. Tavin Sara T. and Casey Elizabeth T. are beautiful and precious and we will love them and miss them forever.***

    FET #1 December 2014
Intralipid infusion on Dec 10. Transfer of 1 day 3 nine-cell embryo into my uterus on Dec. 19. (acupuncture immediately before and after)

  • winstan1 not a stupid question at all.  Permanent placement just means that it is not respite (which is specifically short term, less than two weeks).  This is the first time these children have been placed in the foster care system, so if the parents get their act together they could get them back in 6 months.  The process of the parental ties being severed usually takes around 2-3 years, and that is if that parents are not actively trying to do what they need to do to improve their lives.
This placement wasn't exactly an emergency placement.  They called us Friday afternoon and asked if we would take them.  But at that point they hadn't located this kids.  The family has been pretty transient and the mother could have known they were being taken and was hiding.  It took the investigators around 24 hours to locate the family and remove the children.  That is why it was so late when we got the call.  The investigators and caseworkers were out trying to locate the kids.  So we knew a day ahead of time, which was great!
I told my wife about all the responses on here and she read the thread and cried.  Thank you for all of your kind words.
Here is a little update-the kids are still doing well.  The toddler M, had a rough night last night.  She didn't go to bed as easily (not surprised).  She cried a lot and asked to go to her mama's house.  It broke my heart, but I understood.  I went in her room multiple times and reassured her and would remind her of all the fun things we do at our house.  She finally fell asleep around 11pm.  The baby K woke up around 2am, ate and then went back to sleep.  She is still snoozing away.  Right now I have agreed to take the night feedings, but that might change.
This is going to be our new normal for awhile, we are still on wobbly legs, but we will get a routine and some normalcy in no time.  :-)

  • winstan1 I am happy to answer questions, some I am not able to answer though.  In this situation it looks like we will have them a minimum of 6 months.  They will get visitations with the mother, if she agrees to show up and is sober.  We will have direct interaction with the parents, in this case probably just the mother.  Each situation is different, so in this case we will probably meet at the county children services location or the foster agency for visitations to begin with and from there could meet for an outing at a park, and so on.  Just depending on if the mother does what she needs to do to get sober, get a job and acquire housing.  All of these things she is offered assistance with thru the county.
