Baby sleep question

Since we've been home, when we put LO down to sleep on his back(like we're supposed to) he rolls onto his side. Is this bad? Should I put him on his back and roll up some blankets to keep him that way?
He didn't do this in the NICU and were seeing the pedi tomorrow and I'll be asking then. But should I let him sleep on his side in the meantime?

Re: Baby sleep question

  • Anna does this too! She loves to be on her side and when I roll her back she fusses and always ends up back on her side. Sorry I'm no help but thanks for asking this!

  • Both mine were side sleepers too. DS started in the NICU and they used a sleep positioner for him which they also sent home with us but I was too paranoid to use it. Pedi always told me that its fine if they move themselves into that position, but we should always put them on their backs. It is maddening in the beginning though!!

  • DD2 does it and I typically just let her be if she does it on her own. I wouldn't use any blankets or anything to reposition the baby if I were you. Back when DD1 was born they used to say back was best but side was "okay" so she slept on her side a lot. I know things have changed but if I moved DD2 everytime she rolled on the side just a little then I would be touching her every 3 seconds.

  • We swaddle, so LO can't roll very far. But in general, at least with older babies, if baby can get himself into a position after you put him on him on his back, it's ok to leave him.

  • Back to sleep, if they can roll then they are okay to leave them. No blankets.

It is hard to not freak about it, but try to relax he is just learning and doing his own thing.

  • Thanks guys! I'll still be double-checking with the pedi, but y'all have made me feel better about this. We do put him on his back, I think he just prefers to sleep on his side.

  • Ziggy my DD1 and DD2 are side sleepers the pedi said its fine
  • Both of my girls rolled to their sides. They hated back sleep. I put them in sleep sacks to eliminate the need for blankets.
  • I agree with PPs but definitely check with your doc, would love to know if he says something different. Just wait til he rolls on to his tummy to sleep. Scary, I hated it but there was no stopping him.

  • So this kinda goes along the same lines: We swaddle baby right now when he sleeps, but I am constantly worried about him being too hot/too cold. With the crazy cold weather we are having, I feel like more layers = better, but then I worry about him over heating.

Right now we are doing a layette or onesis or undershirt plus either a sleep sack or a swaddle. Is this enough? Is it too much?

  • I think it depends on the temp of your house. We keep it at 68 and do a sleeper with feet plus a sleep sack or swaddle.

  • We keep our house at 75. But, our thermometer is in the (very small) living room, which runs warmer because the tv gives off heat. That makes the rest of the house cooler. We have played around with different clothing combinations-what seems to work for us during the day (onesie, footed sleeper, receiving blanket swaddle) is different than at night (basically, everything from daytime, plus a fleece swaddle). She will (and has!) let us know if she's too warm or too cool.

  • What I have found is that she only rolls to one side not the other, so when I put her down to sleep on her back if she is looking the other way she won't roll
