High-Risk Pregnancy

pregnant after placenta abruption

Just wondering if anyone else has or is pregnant after a previous placenta abruption and what your experience has been so far? I lost my son in July at 18w4d and we are now expecting again and so far everything is going good we have our first ultra sound Monday and I know we will see MFM throughout our 2nd tri. Just looking to hear from others!

Re: pregnant after placenta abruption

  • I had an abruption at 29w4d with my son, they weren't sure if I abrupted first or went into PTL first because I had been contracting a lot before. My MFM said that an abruption happening again was very unlikely. I'm on bedrest and nifedipine for contractions again, but haven't had the bleeding/spotting like I did last time. We'll see what happens. It's definitely scary being pregnant again after a preemie, I can't even imagine how hard it is after a loss. Good luck!

  • First off im so sorry for your loss. Congrats on your second pregnancy! I had a partial abruption at 31 weeks and went into labor. After a full night they were able to stop contractions and give me steroid shots. My fluid levels were low as well. I was on strict bedrest for 5 weeks then went toxic with pre-e and had an emergency c-section. My baby boy came out perfectly healthy. Now I'm on my second pregnancy and besides high bp and being watched closely all is well this time. I hope you have a good pregnancy this time around.

  • I developed pre-e suddenly at 30.6w and ended up with a full abruption while in labor.  DD was delivered by emergency c-section in 32 seconds!  She is now two and doing great!!  We are 13w with baby #2 and I am now on Lovenox, baby aspirin and fish oil in an attempt to prevent the pre-e and abruption this time.  Unfortunately, the stats I have been given are not great as far as recurrence.  I was told (and this is based on my sudden/early onset and abruption) that there is a 50% chance I will develop pre-e in some form again and a 30% chance it will be as early and as severe.  Also, the one of the biggest risk factors for having an abruption is having one previously.  I always push to get as much info as possible, but sometimes the stats are pretty scary.  Best thing to do is to stay on top of things and make sure you talk to your doctor if you start having any symptoms.  Best of luck to you!!
  • I was about to ask the same question as you! How are things going for you now? I had a partial abruption at 19 weeks and bled daily until I went into preterm labor at 24.1. My son died after 26 days in the NICU and we just started TTC again. I'm absolutely petrified that this will happen again and I'll lose another child. I had no risk factors for my abruption and had no other complications; my pregnancy was otherwise completely normal and healthy. We desperately want a child, though (in fact, more than one), so I'm hoping against hope that this time the odds will be in our favor.

  • I just thought I'd update you... I am currently 26 wk pregnant after the abruption. The pregnancy has been most difficult for the roller coaster of emotions but all in all going well. I've had spotting on since 18 wk and at 24 wk I was told to stop working and I'm on I guess a light duty not bed rest but limited lifting....and in the two weeks haven't been spotting. My ob believed the placenta has started to lift and t hat caused the spotting. My second tri has been monitored every two by MFM. I now see my ob every 2 weeks and will just see MFM to check cervical length and if my low lying placenta goes up...if all goes well we will be released from their care and just see ob. I fee like every week is a small victory and I know my Dr.s are keeping a close eye on me. It is a difficult pregnancy because every pain or backache you are just ready for the worst. Very emotional! Sorry for your loss and best of luck to you.
  • I am curious as to how the rest of your pregnancy went.  Hopefully you are holding your precious little right now. I suffered a placenta abruption this past September. I was 3 days overdue, it was completely spontaneous, happened when my water broke.  We lost our baby boy 3 hours after he was born via c-section. He was our first.  Our plan was always to have one after the other, and as we are now approaching the recommended wait time, I'm starting to really worry about it. One reason is just guilt and grief. I know I will have to figure out if I'm ready emotionally.  But the other is worry about physically and it happening again. I'm hoping your story gives me hope.
