Postpartum pain...possibly TMI

Hi all!
I gave birth almost 6 weeks ago and still have pain from my stitches (second degree tear). I have also had pain all over down there - maybe from catheter placement during epidural?? I have had so much burning, then itching. I was so SWOLLEN everywhere, I literally could not sit til 3 weeks postpartum, and I still feel incredibly sore. I can't believe people get the go ahead to have sex 6 weeks postpartum. I feel permanently damaged or something. Is this NORMAL? I actually ended up starting Monistat 7 because the burning was so so bad, I thought maybe I had a yeast infection. The burning/itching has reduced A LOT after two days, but I am still VERY sore pretty much everywhere. Ugh....when is this supposed to stop hurting?

Also, could breastfeeding be making matters worse since it makes it drier down there?

Not sure what to do...my midwives have been NO f'ing help at all! I don't have a UTI - it doesn't hurt when I pee or anything. It just generally feels dry and sore all the time all over down there. I have my 6 week appointment at 7 weeks, and if it still hurts and my midwife just smiles and says she's sorry again, I feel like I'm going to punch her in the face. Who else can I see or what can I try if it is still this bad?

PS...I have tried everything, the peri bottle, soaking in salt, herbs, ice, Tylenol, Advil, ugh...everything!

  • If I was in that much pain, I would have called my doctor a long time ago. Have you called yet?

  • I agree, I would try to get help. I got a second degree tear and was able to sit and everything fine by the second week with rare discomfort. Now at 7 weeks PP everything is getting back to normal, I can't imagine sex right now as my bits are still a little sore but definitely not putting me through that much discomfort!! I'd call someone else, urgent care or your hospital or someone other than your midwife!
  • Can you see an actual OB? My doc said that some women are healed up in 6 weeks, and some women might need an extra month to fully heal. She told me that because of the drop in estrogen after giving birth many women get very dry down below, myself included. She prescribed an estrogen cream for me to rub on my incision (I had a third degree episiotomy/tear) to help moisturize things and help it heal properly. Maybe you could talk to your midwife about something similar?

I am not in pain or sore at this point, but every woman is different so your pain may still be in the range of normal. Definitely talk to a doctor about it!

  • I had a 3rd degree tear. This last week I had some extreme itching and took the canesten oral and it got way better- so I think I did have a yeast infection. Likely from wearing pads for so long. I'm almost 6 weeks post partum and I don't really have any extreme pain anymore though. Just sometimes when sitting on the toilet my vagina feels "heavy". I also had a catheter to relieve my bladder when I was pushing and I found that I was pretty tender around my urethra until just this last week! But if you're still extremely sore I would go see a obgyn. Because of my stitches my obgyn requires me to see her 6w pp to check healing so it's probably a good idea to get a second opinion :)
