Yes, I just got one a year ago, but my midwife said that it's important to get it between 28 and 36 weeks I think? That way the newborn will be immunized against pertussis.
I got it at 30 weeks. The new recommendation from the CDC is that mothers get a TDAP with every pregnancy. It's not only about giving you immunity, but passing some of that immunity through to the fetus who would otherwise be completely vulnerable to pertussis until his or her first vaccinations.
Yep! Got mine at 28 weeks. My husband should be getting his any week now... it passes through the placenta so is able to protect the baby. Very important!
Thanks for posting this. Didn't know about the CDC recommendation. My MW said I was ok because I got it in the hospital with my 2nd, 3 years ago. Kinda bothers me that they didn't know this. Gonna call tomorrow. I'm 35 weeks.
DH already got his. I'm a FTM but I will get mine when before birth. I'm not 100% sure when but my MW and I discussed it already. It's not worth the risk to us. All of the family that will be staying before LO gets his first shots are getting one too.
Can I just ask where you guys are from? I'm wondering if Doctors or MW's are more aggressive about it in certain areas? I talked to my MW today about it and I told her that I got it at the hospital after my son was born in December of 2010. She was like "it is really a personal decision and we don't push it." She sorta implied that there are some unknown risks that I should be concerned about. So that gave me pause and kinda concerned me. She is pretty crunchy and I am too to an extent, but I am very pro-vaccination. They aren't even carrying it in the Birth Center right now. I have to go to my regular doctor to get it anyway, so I called him to get his recommendation, but he isn't in today so...I wait.
I also called my pediatrician and I didn't speak to him directly but the nurse said "he said that he doesn't have a lot of experience with this, but that he is all for it if it will provide better protection for the baby."
I feel like no one knows what they are talking about today regarding this and I'm usually very confident in my healthcare providers. Have a call into the OB now too.
I'm over-thinking this aren't I? It says it right there on the CDC website.
I had one just a year and a half ago when I was pregnant with DD and my doc told me I should get it again this pregnancy (and every pregnancy). Fwiw, I had a midwife with dd and an ob this time and both really pushed for it. But like PP, I live in Washington where there is a huge epidemic.
I went ahead and got mine done at my last appointment. It made my arm sore for days but worth it to keep my baby safe. My husband plans on getting his done at my 36 week appointment next week.
Yes! Got mine and my DH, my parents and DH's parents got it. You should have those who will be around the little one a lot get it. Also, I read it takes four weeks to be effective, so have them do it at least a month before you or due.
Interesting, my OB told me I absolutely should get it in the 3rd trimester, it passes on initial immunity to LO at birth. Additionally, like PP, I've heard that anyone that's going to be around the baby a lot in the first 3 months or so should have an up to date vaccine.
Interesting discussion. My MW just told me about this vaccine but I told her I wanted to do more research before deciding.
I'm generally very pro-vaccine but the justification for getting this every pregnancy is weak even on the CDC's webpage. I'm unsure what I will do at this point -- I brought these points up to my MW and she said she really didn't think it was necessary every pregnancy.
"Transplacental transfer of maternal pertussis antibodies from mother to infant may provide protection against pertussis in early life, before beginning the primary DTaP series. There is evidence of efficient transplacental transfer of pertussis antibodies to infants. The effectiveness of maternal antibodies in preventing infant pertussis is not yet known, but pertussis antibodies can protect against some disease and the severe outcomes that come along with it." (emphasis added)
"By vaccinating a woman with Tdap during pregnancy her infant will gain pertussis antibodies during the most vulnerable time – before three months of age. However, providing this early immunity may also interfere with the infant’s immune response to DTaP vaccine. The infant’s immune response to DTaP may not be as strong, but the clinical implications may not be significant." (emphasis added)
I'm not saying you shouldn't get vaccinated for this, I'm just saying even the CDC's evidence for doing so isn't conclusive.
I believe it isn't just for the antibodies, but also to prevent mom from contracting pertussis and passing it to baby. Our local pediatricians recommend vaccinating dad and anyone who will be in close contact with baby as well.

THAT WAS AN ACCIDENT I DIDN'T MEAN TO FLAG YOU. I'M SO SORRY. Any way to get it off?????
