Non Dairy Peeps

I am trying my best to eliminate dairy for my kid, but oh my god it is hard. This girl had 2+ glasses of milk a day while pregnant, and cutting it all out is tough!

When the pedi first suggested going dairy free, I got myself some Lactaid milk thinking that was an acceptable substitute...until the pedi told me at the next appt that it still has milk proteins. Oops.

So what ARE some dairy-like things that I can have? She said no soy milk. Is there any milk substitute that would be ok? Any good non-dairy cream that can go in my coffee?

Re: Non Dairy Peeps

  • Perhaps almond milk? And Oreos are dairy free. I had to go dairy free with ds1, but I don't really like milk except on cereal so it wasn't too bad.

  • I do almond milk! It's not the same but pretty good. Also you can still have goat cheese and manchego - two delicious cheese options.

  • I am currently eliminating dairy and soy as well and it is hard! There is either dairy or soy in almost everything. Be careful items that say dairy free usually have soy instead. Coconut milk is what I drink. There is a coconut milk creamer as well, SO delicious brand. I use earth balance butter spread, red container is dairy and soy free and it tastes pretty good! I have not found a cheese alternative that I like but there is a brand Daiya that is vegetable based. Enjoy life had some dairy soy free chocolate that's really good. Check out the breastfeeding board they have an MSPI(milk soy protein intolerance) check in thread every week. Good luck!

  • Almond milk, rice milk, or coconut milk! The brand "So Delicious" has good options.
  • I'm a huge milk lover and Almond Milk isn't so bad

  • I assumed almond milk was a no-no, but if not that would be perfect! Bought some last week and liked it. I will look for the SO delicious brand too.

How is it that goat cheese would be ok? Is goat milk easier to digest than cow milk?

  • If you check out mspimama.com or godairyfree.com, they have some lists of specific "allowed" items. That's how I started off and then just label read everything I would normally buy.
  • I live by coconut milk, coconut creamer, coconut oil and Earth Balance spread. The only thing I miss is cheese.

  • Yeah the babies are usually allergic to cows milk protein - goat doesn't have the same stuff I guess. It's worked out well for me!

  • Almond milk everything!

  • Almond milk! I've cut out dairy for LO too, and have found a favourite in the dark chocolate almond milk :)
  • I also love dark chocolate almond milk. I'm now baking from scratch and using coconut oil in place of butter, and flax seed meal as an egg substitute (only because I never use all the eggs before they spoil).

  • I'm dairy, soy, egg, and tree nut free. It's not so bad once you witness the change in your LO. That motivates me to stick with it. Visit mspimama.com and godairyfree.org for guides, revipes, and MSPI info. My favorite stores are Whole Foods Market, Fresh Market, Publix, and Kroger. My favorite substitutes are So Delicious Coconut Milk, So Delicious ice cream, Earth Balance "butter spread" and Daiya cheese.
  • I've been dairy free by choice, intolerant so I still cheated. I noticed that C was in so much pain so I cut it from my diet. I had some Greek yogurt yesterday morning and her reaction was instant. Dark green poop, screaming in pain, choking on my BM the following 3 feedings and finally, projectile vomiting last night. So that's it, I'm officially in the dairy free group too! DH, our siblings and I were all lactose intolerant as babies as well.

So we're gluten free, dairy free and as spy free as can be -I don't actively eat it but don't omit completely. Our pediatrician keeps saying that her issues have nothing to do with my diet. With celiac, I'm living proof that food influences everything in your body. (I need to find one more in line with my ideas.)

Not to thread jack but maybe we can do a check in? I think it's could be helpful for us to find replacements for these allergies/intolerances... Any takers?
  • I think that would be a great idea! It's easy to feel alone when everyone else is eating all the yummy stuff!
  • I've been drinking coconut milk which is pretty yummy. Man, it's hard though. I ask for olive oil instead of butter at restaurants. The hardest part is cutting out soy as well because I feel like everything I used to eat had soy or cheese. Sigh.

I'm tryin to cut out egg and tree nuts too but then I read that coconut is a tree nut!

Some readings suggest that it's a tree fruit. Does LO have an issue?
