October 2012 Moms

Are you the type of parent who...

- mostly schedules your activities around LO's naps and feeding schedule?
Or
- mostly lets your LO adapt to your schedule?

DH thinks I am too strict for trying to schedule our activities around DS' naps. But ever since sleep training, DS doesn't nap well outside of the crib, so I would rather miss an activity than deal with a meltdown. Of course if it is something we can't miss (like a wedding or function, we will go regardless), but if its something like a family lunch, I will move it around to fit DS' schedule. What do you do?

  • I try to schedule around naps and B is pretty flexible. Scheduling around naps is much easier than dealing with a sleepy, cranky baby while out somewhere.

  • I am SAHM and I defnitely schedule events around lo's nap schedule. He still takes 2 naps a day, he goes down around 10am for his first nap.  Because of that, we can never go to any storytime or music class near us because they all start between 9:30-10:30am.

When we go visit my ILs (they live 45 mins away), we try to go there at lunch time after DS has his first nap at home. However, DS always ends up having to take his second nap in the car, and 45 minutes is not enough (he usually naps 1.5 hrs at each nap). Couple of times I ended up sitting in the car with him in the garage  and let him nap. Besides, even though the car trip is 45 mins, DS rarely falls asleep right away... It takes him 10-15 mins before falling asleep in the car.

  • He takes one nap mid day nd will sleep in the car if its that time but I enjoy me time during nap time so nope we hang out do stuff after nap time or before it

  • I always try to schedule around nap time. Sometimes things are out of my control in which case it sucks, and sometimes I feel like things are always scheduled during nap time. My husband always asks me why I do things around nap time. He always says lets just go she will be fine. Yeah right 8-|
  • I live by naps. It is the only time I can get everything done or rest myself. So I make sure naps happen on time consistently. I fear that if I just go with the flow too many days in a row that they will get used to that and not take.naps as well. They all take naps well right now. Even dd will go up and have a quiet time in the afternoon. Sometimes she still falls asleep.

  • She is pretty flexible with nap times if we need to go out and do something I will try to get her nap on the way there or after when we are home.

  • We schedule around naps. Sleeping through the night was a hard won battle for us and neither my husband and I are willing to mess with the nap schedule and mess that up.
  • Both - we try to schedule things that we can around his schedule. Like today we are meeting friends at a restaurant for dinner at 4:30... DS will be fresh from his afternoon nap.

Usually, we don't schedule around his naps because we go to places where he can nap (families / friends houses).

  • Please don't hurt me...

I try to schedule around as much as I can, but if we aren't home for a nap, she car sleeps. She doesn't sleep well, and we usually have a cranky girl, but not terribly unmanageable.

  • I try to schedule around her nap. Around 2 I started being more flexible with DS but at this age I feel that nap is just so essential

  • Naps are a struggle for us on the weekends. He sleeps great at daycare and I try to follow his schedule like daycare but he usually only sleeps for 20 minutes on the weekend so it doesn't mess up our activities to much.

  • I'm a little neurotic about sticking to nap schedules and only schedule things around them. Sure, once in awhile something comes up and we have to shift or skip, but it gets ugly. My kids thrive on their scheduled naps and are much easier to manage and happy children when we don't mess with nap time.

  • She's pretty flexible but I am cognizant of naps. If she's too tired, nobody has a good time anyway!

  • I follow the 80% rule and try to schedule around naps as much as we can. He is between 1 and 2 naps so that gives me a little bit of flexibility. We bet out of town this weekend and he is a mess.

  • Schedule around naps but he naps usually from 11-1 pretty predictably. He completely melts down without his usual nap. If someone wants to have brunch and can't do it later then either I'll go or DH will go.

  • I schedule around his nap. He is sleeping one nap a day now, and I enjoy the quiet time to myself when he's resting.

  • I am a little of both. On the weekends I usually get out one day and go shopping or do something along those lines. We stop to eat when the kids start getting hungry cranky. Then we call it quits when they start to melt down tired cranky! If I am just at home I am way more strict of sticking to their eating napping schedule. If there is a family thing going on I usually request that it is after DD1 naps. DD2 can nap in pack n play anywhere as long as she has a bottle and we play her music.(yes we still do bottles to sleep). DD1 will only nap at our house, MIL's house, or my Mom's house. If the gathering is at one of their houses I don't care what time it is I will have her nap there, but if it is anywhere else I will not go until she has napped. Nobody would enjoy themselves if she doesn't get her sleep!

  • I am lucky that my 3yo DS and my 16 month old DD nap at the same time.  She gave up her 2nd nap at 9 months like a total jerk.  Anyway, I like to have them napping around 12:00.  I can get away with like 2:30-3 if I have to, though.  I try and keep their schedule consistent with lunch around 11:30 and naps right after.  Happier babies!  Plus, baby doesn't nap long enough if she goes down after 12. :/
