What's in your nursery? (Literally or Figuratively)

Hi All,

I know I have a toddler already, but I'm in the process of trying to prep for April's arrival. I wanted to see what other people had in their nurseries, or registry's or wish lists for future kids.  What's your favorite product you couldn't imagine living without?  Also one final question - if your cloth diapering how many diapers did you have for the newborn weeks/months?  (I had a stash of diapers on loan from a friend last time, and I need to supplement this time around).

Re: What's in your nursery? (Literally or Figuratively)

  • Literally -- a closet full of junk, a bookcase full of adult books (not porn, just not kid books), a twin bed we got for free (used for guests, not for future kids), a nightstand that didn't fit in our master br, and our ironing board. :)

BUT we are registering next weekend at BRU and I can't wait!  I am down to 2-3 options for most of what we need (thanks Baby Bargains and Lucie's List) and just want to check stuff out in person.  We are planning on a whale/nautical theme and want to register for this bedding:

Nursery completion requires electricians and painters to come, so it will be a while.

  • @ball.and.chain. I love whales (and nautical themes!).  What a super unique and adorable theme. I look forward to seeing it come together in the next few months :-)

I'll check out the two lists you mentioned, too and see if I can get organized here...

I'm looking forward to posting pictures when it's finished!  My wife grew up near the ocean and loves ANYTHING to do with it, so I knew it would be something she would get into.

  • We also did a nautical theme! :) And because it is timeless, once we got rid of the cribs, we bought red sheets with blue/white striped duvets and the theme goes on! :)

  • @Atxmommas - I'm adding the flower/twig accessory to my cart. I have the grass tray which I love but I've had small parts fall off repeatedly - I'm glad to have a solution. :-)

@2mamaz - I heart your stars and moon bedding. I think looking at the Land of Nod site is going to get me in trouble. We were originally just going to use the same owl theme but recently realized that maybe Own deserves something all his own. :-)
  • @manada really wants a mini crib and then move to a floor bed. We will see if she wins me over. (I'm down with the floor bed; I just think we will need something for the time between mini crib and floor bed)

We are looking into options for a combo dresser and changing table. I think our current idea is to build a change table top into an appropriate-height dresser.

Of course we still have lots of time since we are only PUPO and don't know if that or the other embryo will result in a pregnancy. But we are embracing an attempt at "if you build it, they will come."
    ****loss discussed*****

We're queer. I'm 33, have severe stage 4 endo, and had both fallopian tubes removed. My love ("Manada" on the boards, 32) was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve. We did Partner IVF (my eggs, her uterus). We lost our twins Tavin and Casey at 21 weeks gestation.

    Our IUIs
with @Manada: IUI# 1-7 (December 2012- September 2013) all BFN. Tried natural, femara, clomid, puregon/follistim, clomid and menopur combo, both the ovidrel and HCG triggers.

    Our IVFs:
IVF #1 my eggs November/December 2013: Cancelled IVF due to poor response

    IVF #2 my eggs/Manada's uterus January/February 2014
BCPs and lupron overlap Stimmed: 1/22-2/2: Bravelle and Menopur (dosage ranged from B300 and M150 to B375 and M150 to B300 and M225)
2/4 retrieved 10 eggs. Endo was much worse than expected. Only 3 eggs fertilized; February 7 transferred two day 3 embryos, froze one. All great condition.
    BFP eve of 6dp3dt; Beta 1 (11dp3dt): 110; Beta 2 (13dp3dt): 175; Beta 3 (15dp3dt): 348; Beta 4 (19dp3dt): 2222; Beta 5 (21dp3dt): 4255

We also have some ikea spice racks add book shelves and an L-shaped book shelf in the corner of the room with all his changing stuff on it. We have filled the spice racks with books and he loves being able to grab them easily. Here's a picture of the dresser with no handles. I just love it :-)

I had to research mini-crib and floor bed. I really love the floor bed - it looks very European to me (maybe IKEA influence?).  I think I'm going to look into this type of bed for Kaden since we're hoping to transition him into a bed sometime this Spring/Summer.  If its the same as the ones I googled it looks like sometimes there is a frame, (sometimes not) and a lot of people seem to make it really cozy and fun. Great idea - thanks for sharing!! :-)
  • @clairmeij - I love your idea of lining the drawers with maps (especially of places you've been). The idea itself sounds pinterest worthy to me.  I just added making a map art piece to my list of ideas/inspirations. :-)

@sarahtrpt - thanks for the diaper breakdown. I'm starting to do some searching on craigslist, etc to see if I can build my diaper stash. I probably have about 6-8 newborn size diapers (a ton of one-size all-in-ones, but I think Kaden is still going to be in diapers in April).  So I have about 30 to go....Sigh... ;-)

@themommymonster & @yachee - thank you for sharing your nurseries.  @yachee - I love the pics of your nursery!  We  also have a giant bear.  At first I thought it was too much - but Kaden looooves it. He pounces, cuddles, hugs and wrestles it all the time. It is one of the cutest things to witness.  I appreciate the pics of the spice racks too, great idea for keeping kids books organized. :-)

  • This is such a great thread! Love all the pics! :)

So, as I have mentioned previously, my wife has taken on the nursery as her project and it will mostly be a surprise to me. We picked out the crib together, and there are a few other pieces that I know will be going in there, but my wife is going to work on the nursey behind closed doors and will let me see when it is done. This is for 2 reasons -- 1 because she views the creation of the nursery as sort of a surprise gift for me; 2 (and more importantly) -- we decided before we even got pregnant that the nursery would be her project. She is thinking of it as creating baby's first home for her in the outside world, since I have given baby her first home on the inside throughout pregnancy. It is important to her, and I fully support it. I am excited to see how everything comes together when it is done!

With that being said, our nursery is actually a super tiny room, so all that we are going to have space for in there furniture wise will be the crib, the dresser that will double as a changing table, a bookshelf, and perhaps one or two other small pieces. With that in mind, we are actually preparing 2 rooms in our house for when baby arrives. We have decided to change what was our dining room into a playroom that will also have office space for my wife when she is home with baby. We moved the dining room into what was the "sitting room" or formal living room, which we never actually used. The playroom is about 50% done right now, and I have had more input into that room. We bought a sleeper sofa for that room, which will be our guest space, and that room will also house our swing, pack-n-play and rocker/glider. My wife has a vision for this room, and it is really starting to come together. It will definitely be a fun/whimsical room, so I am viewing it as sort of an extension of the nursery.

I look forward to when both rooms are done -- I will definitely post pics! :)

A mini crib is a crib that is smaller than the standard (Davinci makes some nice ones that are readily available in the states). They are about a foot shorter and slightly narrower than a standard crib.

The floor bed is a Montessori concept. There are some gorgeous Pinterest photos of people with rooms with floor beds.

Ideally a floor bed could be used from birth, but that idea was a bit far fetched for H and neither of us loved the idea of getting on the ground everytime we put the baby to bed. So the mini crib is the stepping stone for us.

Ideally I would like to keep our kids in the mini crib until about a year or 14 months and transition them to the floor bed as they get walking. Philosophically I like the idea of creating a room where they are free and safe to explore vs having them get used to sleeping in a crib as a safety thing. Of course. This is all coming from the POV of someone who doesn't have kids......

  • @ATXMommas - I adore Ash's nursery. The colors are beautiful :-) and I love the scrabble tiles.  EV is a huge scrabble fan (personally I'm a terrible player). Did you make the tiles or find them?
I have to agree that Etsy is a dangerous website to visit - though I love it ;-)

@KH826 - I love the fact that your wife is creating the nursery (your little girls first home outside the womb) There's something so perfect and balanced in that idea. I will admit that I would probably struggle with not "peaking" for the weeks/months until I could see it.  Can't wait for pics of both rooms. We also have 1 nursery and 1 playroom area and I like the separation with most of his toys, etc not in the sleeping area. It's worked well so far - we'll see if both kids end up doing okay in 1 room.

@Manada - I am on Pinterest as I type and I'm loving what I find. (I had no idea this was a Montessori concept).  It really seems perfect for young kids.  I think Kaden would love it, and it looks "safer" than having him in a bed high up with rails, etc.  It will mean we change some things in his room, but to be honest we'd do that anyone in case he gets up and about without adult supervision ;-)  Thanks for sharing.
  • @Jazibel - we were inspired by a blog that gave DIY instructions on how to make the scrabble tiles. Being almost completely inept at anything crafty, I searched Etsy and found vendors that sell the tiles. Z, who is not very crafty herself, really wanted to make them for our son. So, a very crafty friend of ours helped her make them. Besides READ, we have the words PLAY and LAUGH intersecting on another wall. Z (and I) are very proud of her handmade contributions!

  • @yachee and @ ATXmommas I love, love, love your nurseries! The grey chevrons are so cool; I always find myself pinning nurseries with grey chevrons.

I obviously don't an actual nursery at this point, but I have already done way too much thinking about what our eventual nursery will look like.  We'll have a mini crib, a wardrobe, a dresser with changing pad on it, and a rocking chair (the rocking chair my mom nursed me in!). Also, since DW and I are total nerds, and DW is specifically a science nerd (she's getting her Ph.D. in chemistry), we want it to be science themed.  We want to paint the name of our baby in amino acids on the wall, make a mobile of atomic models, and get a quilt of the periodic table.

@Jazibel - we were inspired by a blog that gave DIY instructions on how to make the scrabble tiles. Z (and I) are very proud of her handmade contributions! image
Love them - tell Z she did a great job!! I just showed EV to get her buy in (hope you don't mind if we use your idea :-)

  • We wanted a calm, relaxing feeling in the nursery.  We had amazing friends that painted aspen trees on the wall (there are 3 more trees on the other side of the crib).  We love how it turned out! We bought the crib off craigslist for a great deal and found the tema dresser on there as well.  There is also a nursing chair in the corner that still comes in handy.

This picture was taken right before LO was born...I remember being so excited to bring the baby home to her nursery that we worked so hard on.  What a great memory!
  • Thanks @herbabymama - I want our kids to both feel special and remember their own unique childhood things (like your Christmas ornaments). I'm the oldest but I remember growing up with my brother how sensitive we both were about things like that.  We have had a crazy year and I'm not even sure I'm settled or unpacked for that matter - but I'm hoping the next couple of months will give me plenty of time to get a little more prepared and organized ;-)

Thanks for the cloth diaper count too - my mom just offered to get Owen a diaper service, but I told her I might try to persuade her to gift us cloth diapers (new or used). I like being able to take care of them myself. I'm hoping to find a "one-size" fits all that could work through the newborn stage - though if I remember correctly its a little hard to find a "one-size" that fits their little butts :)

This is beautiful - thanks for sharing. You have very talented friends :-)
  • @stringy813- thanks for the recommendation, I'll look them up in a second.  Kaden was 9.5lb when he was born, he's always been in the 90-95%.  He grew quickly too, so if Owen is anything like his brother he could be 9+lbs and 11lbs soon after birth.  Made for a sore back ;-)
  • @herbabymama -- what sort of diapers are you using?  Prefolds or fitteds?  brand?

Am curious as to what your experience was with the newborn ones.   In our haste (and because we didn't know what a prickly beast hope is) -- I bought a bunch of infant prefolds mostly when we were thinking it wouldn't take forever to get a baby.   We don't have a newborn stash at all though - I suspect we'd end up with a service, but am curious what your experience was.

  • We have a small room, so furniture is a crib, changing table/small dresser, glider, and some shelves. We did a baby animal theme, and our friend is painting a beautiful mural. Of course, our daughter is now almost 6 months old and it's still less than halfway completed.

As far as DIAPERS... We had 4 small gDiaper pants, 30 inserts and 10 liners. We used gDiapers on the hospital, and then had about 10 Lil Joeys (my fave for the diaper bag!) 6-7 kissa fitteds with 4 covers I think? That was mostly what we used the first 2-3 months. She just outgrew the small gdiapers (we have some of the next size) and still fits the fitteds. My wife and I have a compulsive addiction. We just counted our stash and we have 74 diapers. Not including too small/too big, or prefolds, or extra inserts. :)
