Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I win the Terrible Mom of the Day award today :( (TMI...)

I'd posted a few times about DD being constipated, and now she's mostly not....but I think I did it to her with the foods I was feeding her over the last 4-5 days! :(  She had: rice cereal, apples, bananas, and some other things that I don't think are constipating, but I think the prime culprit was the rice cereal.  So PSA: Don't give your baby rice cereal more than once a day when they're getting started on solids!!  (At least, IMO this is what did it.)  Last night she slept but woke up a few times really crying hard and straining with no poop to show for it.  Finally at 6am this morning DH went out for glycerine suppositories, but the worst part was watching her try to get out this HUGE plug that just wouldn't fit through, before we could even put the suppository in there!  Poor girl; she finally got it with some help, though, and it was amazing how quickly her mood improved.  Sigh...I hope we don't have to go through anything like that again soon!  :::throwing rice cereal away prontissimo:::

  • Poor girl! We just started rice cereal and DS seems to be ok.

  • The BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet is very constipating - it's what they prescribe to stop diarrhea.

    Glad she feels better.

  • Ya i learned that apples, and bannans are a no no for my DD backs her up instantly!! Do prunes every other day and pear juice will help, glad she is feeling better. Poor baby!!
  • Rice cereal constipated DD, too. I threw the rest of the box away and now she has oatmeal. Much better!

  • DD has had issues with constipation for months, so I've been really careful about what I feed her. We skipped rice cereal for this reason and went to oatmeal. I also feed her bananas on a very limited basis. She LOVES them so I think of them as a treat, but too many and she's backed up again.

  • This is why we skipped rice and went straight to oatmeal.

I hope it doesn't happen to her that bad again!

  • you just need to learn what works with your dd's system. rule of thumb is the BRAT diet. you just have to learn what counterbalances the offending food and give it in moderation. its trial and error in the beginning. no biggie. glad she feels better

  • rice cereal seems to make my DD more regular but oatmeal and bananas constipate her big time.  I give prunes or fresh pear in the mesh feeder to help.

  • yea: rice cereal, apples, bananas, sweet potatoes are all very constipating!

the opposites (un-constipating): pears, prunes, peaches

if i give DD a constipating food we have to counter it with one of the un-constipating ones or we have very bad poop days (lots of screaming, tears and large very hard poops -- that roll out of the diapers).
