Crib question

I imagine this has been a post before but I'm strictly mobile since my laptop crashed (part of why I don't post much either but you believe I'm reading the posts!). We've started looking at cribs and like the idea of the front facing changing area attached as part of the crib. We have found some that convert too. Anyone have experience, pros/cons, opinions about these. I'm not sure if we should just get a changing pad for a dresser or floor or if this crib option is good and you all typically have good advice.

Re: Crib question

  • A friend told me that when the baby gets old enough to stand they could use the attached part to escape. I'd love to hear what the bumpies have to say!

Yeah, I have read that having an attached changing table can be a hazard when the baby starts to climb. They will use the changing table as a booster to climb out, but they can fall off and seriously hurt themselves.

I'm going to stick to a changing pad for on top of a dresser or the floor. Plus, if you plan on converting the crib to a toddler bed or something, having the attached changing table would be a pain in the butt.

This makes sense. My daughter used an adjacent dresser for assistance escaping.

This is why we aren't doin a changing table. The pad will just go on the dresser. Half the time you're changing baby somewhere other than his room anyway.

  • I looked at them in the store and don't see how the baby would fit on it past 8 months or so. Def smaller than a regular changing table.

Thanks ladies. This is helpful. This trying to figure out what we want is hard stuff! I've been reading but I think real experiences are more helpful.

I don't like attached and more specifically don't like front facing. When they start to squirm and roll while changing if you're at the end to change you're not at their side if they try to roll off. And anything attached presents them with help for climbing out.

*I don't know weight limits on those but I purposely went for one with big weight limit so that I can use it for older toddler to all the way til out of diapers.

  • DS had a crib with a set of drawers/shelves attached that came off when it was time to transition it to full size.  He was never an escape artist though, so I had no problems with furniture or bumper climbing or anything.

This time around, we're planning to purchase a regular dresser and put a changing mat on that since I think they look nicer than a lot of the other options available.
