Ring Sling versus Wrap

Have to do more research but wondering what others think of sling versus wrap for infant stage?  I want something to help me be hands free because I have 2 boys that will surely keep me moving!  If I can nurse in it that is even better but not necessary.  Thoughts?  I thought I remember reading something about ring slings and proper positioning to avoid suffocation but that was with DS 2 so things may have changed since then.

Re: Ring Sling versus Wrap

  • Right now I only have wraps, but am looking into a ring sling because I've heard how awesome adn convenient they are. I didn't wrap DS until much later, so I don't have any experience wrapping a newborn or nursing in a wrap. I know there are a lot of videos on youtube that show you how, and give you tips. The attachment parenting board should be able to give you more advice too.

Thank you!  Looked at the different boards and wondered which one would be appropriate to post on.

  • NP! And if you are on FB, search Babywearing 102. They are also a very helpful group. Do you know if you have a local babywearing group near you? Someone there might have a ring sling and could help you out in person with it and give you tips.

  • I have both and an Ergo and a Mei Tai. I find the ring sling to be so convenient for right now with DD bc I can take her in and out really easy. I preferred wrapping in the beginning with DD but started used the RS a lot around 2 months. You could see if your local area has a babywearing group. Mine has meet ups and you can try stuff out before you decide.

  • I used my RS most when DS was little. It's easier to get baby up and down and adjust for bf. When they get a little bigger, wraps are more convenient (back carries) and more comfortable as the weight is more evenly distributed. I'm am SSC person bc I don't have the patience to wrap.

Definitely join Babywearing 102! And search for your local bw group.
  • Why one or the other? BUY ALL THE CARRIERS!!! ;) I have a bit of a problem... I have a woven wrap, a mei tei, an ergo, a moby, a ring sling, and I found a boba ssc at the second hand store this week for $40. Couldn't pass that deal up, right? I want to get another woven for this baby, the one I have now is a 6 and I'm thinking a 3 or 4 would be handy as well. What say you other wrappers? Honestly compared to some baby wearers I feel like my stash is pretty minimal!
I have a bit of a problem too. I have a woven wrap, a Maya RS, a RS I made, an Ergo with newborn insert, an Infantino Mei Tai, and a custom toddler half buckle. I also sold a Moby and a sling. I would love another wrap but think I may just make one out of Osanburg for this summer, I may buy a linen RS off a friend for this summer, and I think I am going to make a water sling.

  • I used an infantino comfort wrap (I think that's what it's called) kinda like a moby but less fabric and easier for a beginner. But it was December and didn't have to worry about heat. I loved it though!

LOL. I made my own baby food starting with my first, cloth diapers with my second and now I think babywearing will be my obsession with number 3 :)  I guess I am wondering what people find best initially but would love to hear what people love at all ages and brands are great to know.  I am definitely open to several just curious when/ what age you find them best for :)

  • I wasn't a baby wearer with my first two but like the thought of it with this one.  I have no clue which one is best so I'm opting for a couple and will re-sell the ones I don't care for.  I'm going to get a Moby, Ergobaby carrier and a Baby K'tan.  I've watched lots of YouTube reviews of each one and each seems to have different qualities.  I'd love suggestions and reviews here from moms who have experience with different carriers.

  • I used my ring sling early on with DS. I also had a Moby, but only used it for a few weeks and then sold it. Sleeping Baby Productions has the best variety/value on RS and she is a WAHM. Starting about 6 months I used a buckle carrier and then at a year I got into wrapping. Now that DS is 3 I have a toddler Kinderpack that is our main carrier. I plan on starting this baby out in the ring sling too since it is so easy and convinent. There are a ton of tutorials on YouTube showing how to properly use them with a newborn and even different ways to nurse in them.

  • Adding my two cents:
I personally loved my moby and woven for the newborn stage. As other posters mentioned, I felt it was easier to get proper positioning. That being said, I didn't own a ring sling to practice with and have since seen some great tutorials on using a ring along with a newborn (Jillian at PAXbaby just posted one a few weeks ago). I actually plan on buying a ring sling before this baby arrives since I think that with practice it may be a little more convenient for quick trips into the store, etc. Of course, I still plan on using my moby, woven and Mei tai ;) Good luck with your babywearing adventure!

I agree with "BUY ALL THE CARRIERS!!!"  I have a Ergo, Moby, Ring Sling, Boba Air, Toddler Tula, Girasol Size 6 wrap and would love to buy more!  I have a custom ring sling but it is not a woven.  I would love a woven ring sling!   Most of my friends have a size 6 and size 3 wrap.  But I am not a 'huge' wrapper.... I also think my stash is minimal compared to most of my friends!

  • I have an Ergo and Girls of wrap that I used with my daughter but I do plan on getting a RD this time so I will have all of the options.
