Don't go to an "emergency clinic"

If you are having issues, just go to L&D. I have been having some pains so just decided to go to my local emergency clinic. The main reason is that I only have a $150 copay at the clinic, but if I go to the ER or L&D, I have some huge deductible. Plus, the hospital I am delivering at (because I want a vbac) is about 45 minutes to an hour or more away and this one was right by my house.

This is turning into a huge mistake. The "emergency medicine" doctor did not know what hellp was!!! I had to school him on it. Fortunately, I think he listened to me and drew the appropriate blood, but wtf? I am now waiting on an ultrasound. Ugh. I sooooo regret having not just sucked it up and gone to L and D.

update - diagnosis is a kidney infection

  • I'm sorry you're having a bad experience there! I'm glad they drew the blood though and you were knowledgable enough to advocate for yourself! Keep us updated!

  • Ugh what a pain in the ass :( I agree, glad you know what's up and are making sure you get taken care of!

I really want to have faith in these places, my mom went to one recently and they diagnosed her with a sinus infection....it was an abcest tooth.

I was just at one a couple weeks ago and the doctor was an idiot and hacked up my finger. We just got the bill for her little scalpel fest and it's over $1000!! Ughhhh. Glad insurance is covering half of it.
I'm not going back there again.

Hope you get some answers soon and that it's nothing serious!!

  • I made that mistake with DD, I knew I was having kidney stone pain, I just wanted some relief and they were so insistent it was the baby (it was kidney stones) and they didn't even have a doppler on hand to check.....I told them to go to the ob's office down the hall they'd find one there.

  • Last time I went to the clinic, I was checked out by the rude, sarcastic Dr. and then told to go to my OB.  I told her I tried calling, but they didn't have anything that day (was there for a UTI).  She took the liberty of calling my OB HERSELF and then coming back in the room and telling me that my OB is expecting me and to go there (after being there an hour and getting a full exam).  Two weeks later, $150 bill shows up (I have Medicaid)...stupid clinic...

  • I was about to suggest asking the clinic doc to call your OB/after hours line- docs usually have better pull getting your doc on the phone if you can't get in to the office or LD.

But then I saw your above update- sorry about the infection but glad it's not more serious!

  • Yikes!  Hope you feel better soon and thanks for sharing - I won't be visiting an emergency clinic anytime soon!
  • Sorry :( I do have to say though, those doctors are not emergency doctors. They are family practice doctors and often not board certified. I would never recommend any urgent care places.

  • Reminds me of the doctor clinic at the University when I was there. They never had any clue what they were doing and always diagnosed the wrong thing. They also always did a pregnancy test.... Even when I sprained my ankle.

Glad it's nothing more serious. Feel better!

  • Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that, disregard what a said on your other post. I'm glad you went to a clinic and found out what it was. I hope you feel better soon!
  • I'm glad it's just a kidney infection but it still sucks! I'm waiting for our quick care to open. I woke with a raging UTI this morning. Yippee!

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • libbylu7- They used to do the same at my university! I had a sinus infection but they gave me a pregnancy test first.

I'm so glad to hear that your LO is okay and that you were able to get answers. Feel better soon!
  • I haven't had good luck with them either. I've gone for sinus infections and since I'm pregnant, they don't want to give me anything because they aren't my primary doctor. But my ob wants me treated. It's a never ending circle.
  • The other reason I went was because every time I have been to L & D (only when pregnant with ds1), I never got to see an actual doctor. I always had some nurse basically saying what she thought...and this happened at 3 different hospitals on about 4 different occasions. This was how my pree was missed in my first pregnancy. The labor and delivery nurse decided I was just having migraines despite being the walking poster child for pre eclampsia. Idk...maybe there just aren't any good options for after hours or weekend care.

  • Sorry you had a bad experience. I'm suprised they did not send you to the nearest hospital to L&D. Urgent care clinics, emergency clinics, and walk in clinics are not equipped to handle any issues dealing with pregnant women.  The doctors that are staffed at these clinics have little to no knowledge regarding obstetrics. But I am glad you're okay!

When I was pregnant with DS1 and had so many problems, I actually found going to the emergency clinic better than going to L and D. I never once got to even see a doctor at L & D. Like I said, it was a labor and delivery nurse who decided I was "just" having migraines and sent me home when in actuality I was severely preeclamptic. I was sent there with debilitating headaches, vision changes/spots/blurry vision, swelling, high bp and having a 1+ on my spot urine test by my OB. The nurse took my bp lying down (a no-no because it artificially lowers it), said my swelling was normal and just decided on her own that my headaches were just migraines. I should have been kept and given a 24 hour urine.  This was actually the first time I had a bad experience at an EC, but it was bad enough that I won't be going back! Honestly, I really don't know if there is a good option if you happen to need immediate care at an odd time. Maybe if I had gone down to the hospital where my OB and her group are at and had been seen by one of her group, but that seemed like overkill when I was not even sure if this was anything serious. Plus, I didn't really want to undertake a 2+ hour round trip drive in pain by myself.

  • When you aren't pregnant they can be good places. I had problems with my appendix and strep throat both on the weekends and was able to go to the walk-in clinic. It saves a TON compared to the ER and I find the ER a really cold experience from my miscarriage. It seems like all doctors should be able to handle pregnant women though. That's maddening.

No kidding! I understand that they may not know the intricacies of OB, but to not even know what hellp stands for? Come on!

That's scary when the patient knows more than the doctor. A definite red flag to never go back there again (for something that is serious and/or life threatnening). But glad all is well!

  • Ugh, that sounds like a pain and I'm sorry to hear you have a kidney infection!!  Hope you feel well soon!
