Babies on the Brain

Hi! newbie on here.

Hi my name is Ashley and I'm 20. I just recently got engaged on Christmas 2013. We have a 2.5 year old already. And I got my implanon taken out the 5th. We are ttc right away. I really don't want my kids to far apart. But everybody is telling us how awful we are for wanting another baby so soon. I had our daughter when i was 17 and i am recently in college for my rn. Is it bad that we are trying for another one?

Re: Hi! newbie on here.

  • Congratulations on your engagement! What do you mean you are "recently in college"? You just started? Honestly, I would wait until you have graduated and found a job before starting TTC for another one. College is already hard. I can't imagine trying to have done it with a child, let alone a small child AND a newborn.

This. I just had my son in September and I am in graduate school. I am having to quit my job this month because I can't take care of my son and keep up with school and hold down a job. You will have TWO kids and go to school. Keep in mind that you might have to quit school for a couple years until your kids get older. Just prepare yourself for all the possibilities that can happen. Good luck!
  • Hi and congrats!

I would also advise waiting.  You are so young and you have your whole work life ahead of you.  I don't think you are crazy for wanting another, but I do think you should get going on your schooling.

  • Thanks for the advive. I know I'm young. I had my daughter right before my senior year of high school. So I've gotten used to kids and school. Also my daughter was colic and I would go to sleep at 5 in the morning and be at school by 8. So I know the stress, but honestly it doesn't bother me. I also won't be in the nursing program till fall 2016. So I know it would be better to wait, but if everybody had to wait for perfect timing no one would be pregnant.
  • I agree with the others, my advice would be to wait. That is a lot of responsibility, you would really need a heck of a support system to help with child care while at class, studying, etc. People get pregnant while in college; it happens. Some make it work and do what it takes. Some leave school. Even still, everyone I know who had a baby in school would have waited until they were done if they had the choice.

Blech. I hate this phrase. Of course there's no " perfect" time but there ARE good times. And bad times. Sounds like you're going to do what you want, not sure why you asked for out opinion.

  • Nursing school is a particular brand of hell and intensely more physical than a traditional academic program. Additionally, it is an academically rigorous program. If you don't get pregnant for a year (like many healthy couples) then you will be looking at delivering around 11/2015 and would be dealing with an infant/very young toddler plus another child while beginning school.

    My advice for you:
    1. Don't work. You won't be able to.
    2. Secure daycare and stay at school after class until your work/studying for the day is done because once you are home you won't be able to focus on nursing
    3. Take my advice seriously. Almost a third of my class failed out over the course of the program and it was largely due to the fact that people wouldn't quit work or secure daycare in order to enhance their academic focus. Don't waste your money like that.
