3rd Trimester

Castor oil??

I'm 39 weeks & curious for thoughts on castor oil to induce labor. I'm a very small frame & if baby comes next week he should be about 8 lbs. I'm hoping to go into labor soon to avoid a c-section if he is too big. How much castor oil should I take? I've had contractions off & on for a few days but they stop as quickly as they start.

Don't do it..... castor oil is a laxative. You will make yourself miserable if you take it. I know someone who worked at L&D and she said they had a lot of women come in with terrible stomach pain and cramps because they took castor oil.

If you absolutely must try to get your baby out (Although I think you should wait. Baby will come when he or she is ready), I'd suggested sex, and going for walks. Technically nothing else (like castor oil) has been proven to jump start labor.

Just for an example, I had my membranes scraped 2 times at 39 and 40 weeks, plus I went on walks and bounced on an exercise ball and still went 4 days past my due date, 2 days before my scheduled induction date.

Also, I'd like to mention that ultrasounds are notoriously wrong at estimating baby's weight. Not to mention, 8 lbs is NOT that big for a baby. Our bodies were made to push babies out so your body type shouldn't matter.

  • I have searched for this for several days & the only risk I can find is possible dehydration. I know several women personally who used it with no problems & went into labor the next day. I was just curious if anyone else tried it & if it worked for them.

If you know several women personally who used it and they had no problems and went into labor the next day, why are you so curious to know if a bunch of internet strangers tried it? Every pregnancy and every woman's body is different. If you feel comfortable taking the castor oil and think that you will have the same results as the women you know personally then I say go for it. Good luck to you!

  • Why would you do this to your body? When your baby is ready your baby will come. Be patient! Try long walks they relax you, clear your mind, and when the baby is actually ready a walk will help move things along.

  • Absolutely a BIG no - particularly given you are only 39 weeks!!

Your size has nothing to do with your ability to birth a baby.  I have a very petite (95 pound) friend who had an almost 10 pound baby no issues.  Your position in labor is far more important - stay off your back and push on your hands and knees or while squatting as that will open up your pelvis the most.

Besides, there's NO way to know what size your baby is until your baby is here - so relax :)

  • You can stress your baby out by taking such a strong laxative such as castor oil and cause it to pass meconium in the womb, so I would HIGHLY suggest you put some serious thought into this before putting you and your baby into harm's way. Also, it tastes like a dirty ass would smell and there's nothing on God's green earth that can mask the taste, smell, or consistency. (I know this because I had to take it to test for a kidney stone before pregnancy.) You're 39 weeks now, so why not just wait? The weight estimates on ultrasounds this far along are usually inaccurate, anyway and 8 lbs. is not a big baby. If you're trying to avoid a C-section, stop trying to self-induce and let nature take its course.

I tried it with my first, nasty stuff and didn't do a thing. Didn't even give me loose bowels... Never again. The taste/texture is HORRIBLE I will also mention, I was 42 weeks and was told I needed an induction, so tried some natural stuff first. Black and blue cohosh worked :)
