Baby Registry

We are going to be first time parents and we went to register last weekend and it was really hard.  So many things you didn't realize you would need once baby comes. In your opinion what are some of the best things to register for besides the normal (stroller, carseat, highchair, pack n play, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your advice!

  • This depends on your lifestyle and the kind of parenting you are aiming for. And I second @Jennyinheaven answer.

This question has been asked many times. See what was said previously.
  • what one person will say will be different compared to the next … so its what you feel you need and how you are going to do things …

some people are very minimal, some people have everything … some people hate certain things, other praise it.

i would put what you think you need on the registry and go from there :)
  • You can use a starter guide (amazon has one built into the registry) and you can solicit opinions from friends and family whovenbeennthrough the baby thing lately.

I managed on my own with help from the registry guides but- I spent a couple years nannying for my triplet nephews once a week so I also had some practical experience.

  • I had two of my BFFs (who had children) look over my registry online and then we went over what they thought I wouldn't need and what was missing.
Like PPs said, a lot depends on your parenting choices.  For example, I chose to cloth diaper and nurse, so wanted different stuff than someone would who was using formula and disposables.

  • BRU has a guide when you register that will help you hit every category. It is VERY helpful. I'm a STM (DS is 7) and I got overwhelmed and went back 4 different times to register.
It's ok to over register. Anything you don't think you'll use- you can always return to put towards something else.
  • Have you read lucies list? I would start there. I can give you a list but it would take days to put together.

  • I would check out all if the lists that PP posted above. I did a few registry lists and the ones the stores give out have a lot because of course they want you to purchase everything. I also had a friend come with me. BabiesRUs has a registry expert you can make an appointment with.
I am FTM, but have a lot of experience with kids so I felt like I already knew a lot and I was still overwhelmed. It's normal!
Some of the stuff on the lists aren't needed and you can get away with not having if you are in a budget. There are some things that your baby will hate and other babies love.
  • I took my sister in law instead of my DH with me to register, she has two young kids and was very helpful, my advice is to ask someone who you know irl to go with or over your registery, there are way to many things to list here

I did exactly his, and my experienced SIL was a god-send!

DH and I went together to register. We used the guide that BRU gave us as a starting point, and then made adjustments for various reasons. I used Baby Bargains to help choose a crib, mattress, baby carrier, infant car seat carrier, stroller, high chair, humidifier, and so on.

On my registry are most of the above items (already have the infant carrier and stroller), plus things like onesies, bottle starter kids, some pumping accessories (storage bags, wipes), two different bottle starter kits, baby bath products, bath tub, some basic baby toys like teethers, Little Einstein baby jumper thing, crib sheets, changing table covers and pads, Pack N Play, Rock N Play, a few baby dishes (bowls, baby food spoons, sippy cups), a few swaddle sleepers/sleep sacks, swaddle blankets, mattress covers, stroller accessories, Boppy, wipes, thermometer, hooded bath towels and wash cloths, baby first aid kit, diaper bag, baby monitor, a few books.

I'm a FTM so I probably have more on my registry than I need right away, and there's plenty of things we'll be buying from that list that might not be gifted to us. It's all stuff we'll eventually need and use, so whether I get an item that I'll use at 2 weeks or 6 months, doesn't matter too too much to us. One important item not on our registry is diapers and diaper pail because we're still researching cloth diapering vs. disposables, a decision that will be made in a couple weeks after I take an intro to CD class. If we go with disposables, I have Amazon Mom and will be keeping Amazon Prime so I'll get diapers online at a good discount and with free shipping. I also don't know what brand of diaper will work on LO so I'm not registering for them. I have some NB diapers from a friend that didn't finish the case so that will be the first disposable I try if needed.

I had my sister look at it, she has 3 kids. She made a couple suggestions, and I've been tweaking it here and there ever since.

    ETA some clarification

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I used the babies r us guide and had 3 close people with young kids go on and look and let me know what they liked/didn't like. It was very helpful!
  • I asked my SIL's and cousin to look over my registry. My SIL's blessed me with hand me downs so there wasn't as much that I needed but their opinions were very helpful. I also used BRU starter guide check list. It helped a lot and a lot of stuff I realized I don't need. But definitely ask a friend or relative to go with you or look over what you registered for.
  • I used the buy buy baby guide and Lucy's list and went through and edited out things that don't go with our lifestyle. I checked reviews in baby bargains to pick brands.
