Honest opinions about my name choice?

I love old and unique names, especially family names. I am super close to my maternal grandparents and my grandmother's name is Elsie Faye, but she goes by Faye. DH and I have discussed using the name Elsie, and a few days ago it was certain. I was too excited b/c we would be able to tell my grandmother on Christmas! However, last night DH changed his mind- saying he doesn't "feel" it! I think it's just because he's not comfortable with it being so different??? What do you gals think of the name Elsie??? Possible middle names are Caroline, Cate, Claire, or Grace.

  • This is too weird.  I love the name Elsie!!  My great aunt- who was the most wonderful woman I ever- knew passed away 3 years ago, she was my Aunt Elsie.  I actually considered Elsie or Elsa as a middle name!  Sweet!

     Go for it

  • NMS either but Elsie Claire has an ice ring to it.

  • I think Elsie is very pretty and unique.  Maybe you could put a little swing on it and name her Chelsie or Kelsie and your DH will like it more?
  • I love the name Elsie - it's definitely not overused - Of the middle names I like Grace the best, but that all sound great with Elsie.
  • Not a fan. Could you use a variation of it, like Elle or Ella? Or you could use it or Faye as a MN. What about Kelsie? I've known a few girls with that name, and they don't get teased and it's more modern.

  • I love Elsie. I think it is such a beautiful name.

  • It is kinda cute.... Use Elsie with a more updated middle name, that way your DH can use her middle name if he wants to.
  • "old lady" names are becoming popular baby name choices these days... Elsie just is not my style- i think of a cow.

but you need to name your baby something you BOTH agree on and like.... and not care what other people think.

  • It's NMS, but I've seen other kids named Elsie recently.  The older names are coming back in to a certain extent.

  • We are family name people too.  I think this is just something you are going to have to mull over with your husband, and hold off on telling anyone yet (although I appreciate how exciting it would be to tell your grandmother on Christmas!).   I think you just need to give your husband time to think about it.   My husband and I have each nixed possible names, not because they're different, but like your husband, we just were not "feeling" it.

For what it's worth, I love the name Elsie, precisely because it IS different.  Not different in a made-up-spelling kind of way, just not common--but still classic. Also, it's not just some name you decided you liked: it has significant meaning for you.  THAT's what makes it so special.  My fingers are crossed that your husband changes his mind!

  • It is very old school, but those names seem to be coming back.  If it is sentimental, you like it, and it means something to you - then that is what should matter.

  • I think its adorably cute, and most of the names on our list are traditional and fairly main stream. So I hope that helps!
  • I like it, but I know my DH would hate it.

Other variations are Elisa, Eliza, Elise, all with the hard e sound at the beginning.

When I first read it, I thought of the character in Indiana Jones, The blonde who is working for the Nazis and crosses the stone with the holy grail.?

    Good luck!?

  • I like it a lot!!!  If your husband isn't feeling it though you may have to think of an alternative.

  • I don't like the name Elsie at all. The possible middle names sound prettier in my opinion.
  • I love Elsie Grace or Elsie Claire!
  • I love Elsie and it's on our list too...DH is sort of hesitant, but hasn't crossed it off yet, but I'm with you...I love old and unique!

  • I think Elsie is a great name. And like other posters said traditional names are making a come back. The name means something to you so that is important. I would wait until DH is on board before telling any one. I had an aunt Elsie. I like Elsie Cate.

I think DH and I aren't going to tell our family or friends the name we pick. Besides they already know Calvin (DH's grandfather's name) will be our son's name if the baby is a he. Elizabeth will be the middle name if baby is a girl. So that enough for them to know.

As for kids making fun of the name they will do that will just about any name you pick. And it is not a name like the Heathers. hehe

  • I think the name Elsie is adorable! It sounds cute with Cate as a middle name too.
  • NMS.  I think of the cow.  And "Elsie the Cow" would be a hard nickname to go through life with.
  • Could you give her a more 'traditional' given name....Elsa and then nickname it to Elsie?

I have a friend whose daughter Eloise is also going by Elsie so there's another option.

I like Faye.  :-)  Much more original than this generation's Marie -- Grace.

  • Personally, I love that name... my friend who just had a baby named hers that, but she spelled it Elcie.  i think i like your spelling better... hers was Elcie Rae.  Just my opinion, but go for it!

  • I have a good friend who's in her 30s that is named Elsie - I've always liked the name, and as far as i know - no one ever called her "elsie the cow".  If you like it - go with it!

  • I love family name, too.  However, I wouldn't name a child Elsie.  Why don't you use it as a middle name and use Caroline, Cate, Claire, or Grace (I think all of those are beautiful).
  • It's nms.  But my name is Elisa and it gets butchered into Elsie all the time.

I like the ideas about adding a letter the beginning to make it more modern.

  • NMS - but not bad. I like Faye though...
  • i love elsie grace! ?it's interesting how it seems like a name you'd hear often but when you think about it, it's very unique. ?maybe he'll come around?
  • ive known a few girls named elsie. i think it is great!! i like grace as the middle name.
  • I like both Elsie and Faye...I think they're both cute. But I've also never heard of "Elsie the Cow" (I had to google it).
  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate your opinions! Happy Holidays to you all!
