1 hour and a 2 hour instead of 3 hour?

My OB'S office apparently does a 1 hour and a 2 hour all at once instead of seeing if you fail the one hour and having you come back. Anyone done this? How did it go?

I am a little nervous about having to go in on an empty stomach (they require fasting) and then having to drink that stuff and basically having to wait until about 11 or noon to eat anything. I had no problem w with the 1 hour glucose in my first pregnancy, but they also didn't require me to be fasting.

Re: 1 hour and a 2 hour instead of 3 hour?

  • Isn't the 1 hour plus the 2 hour basically the 3 hour test? My confusion may be due to pregnant brain.... I do know that if I fail the 1 hour at my docs, they send you to do the 3 hour instead of 2 hour. So I'm really hoping I pass. I know that this comment didn't help at all!

I think they test at 1 hour and 2 hours only. Not 3 hours.

That's how my OB is doing it now too. I'm like you, I had no issues with the 1 hour because I didn't have to fast. Now I do and for quite a long time. I have mine on Friday. If that's before you, I'll try to let you know how it goes. I'm not looking forward to drinking that stuff on an empty stomach and fasting for 2 hours after.

@kitchencolors, they draw blood, drink, draw blood at 1 hour and 2 hours. They said its because so many people fail the 1 hour, this makes it so less people have to take the 3 hour.

  • I did a 2 hour test. They took my fasted blood first, had me drink the melted popsicle drink, and drew my blood 1 hour and 2 hours after. I'm not going to lie, it kind of sucked, but it really wasn't that bad. I distracted myself with a book.

My OB told me that more offices are moving towards the 2 hour test as it's more accurate than the 1 hour, and if you fail it you pretty much have a GD diagnosis without needing a 3 hour test.

I see! That would still annoy me though...

  • I had a two hour done early (12w) in my last pregnancy. The argument was that the 2 hour was conclusive on its own and cut out needing to go back for a 3 hour if you failed the 1 hour.

My new OB just sent me in for the 1 hour at 24w though.

  • My mw's office does the two hour test, which is new to me.  As others have mentioned, I was told the office prefers this test as it is diagnostic.  If I fail, I will be diagnosed with GD, no other testing required.  Makes me nervous that I won't get any sort of "do over."

Keep us posted.  I'll be interested to hear how it goes.  My test is on the 13th.

  • Yes, that's what they did with me last Monday. LO started kicking wildly and I felt like my heart was racing crazy ...asked the nurse to check everything. It was all good. LO had a good heartbeat. But the test was nasty ...
  • 2 hour test is pretty standard here. I did it this morning and it wasn't that bad.

  • My OB does a 2 hour test instead of a 1 hour.  I had to fast.  Take blood, drink, take blood, take blood.  The drink tasted pretty good.  Like a flat orange soda.  I felt pretty crummy in the 2nd half of it from the sugar rush, but once I got done and ate I was fine.

  • I'm actually having the opposite experience. My first pregnancy they had me fast and do the 3hour. Thins time they said one hour and no fasting. I was so nervous for the three hr but it went fine! I made an appt to do it first thing in the am . I would usually be sick if I didn't eat first thing, plus I had having my blood drawn, but neither of those two things bothered me! I treated myself to a huge sandwich when it was over :)
  • Mine will be like that too but I'm a ftm and it's next Wednesday so I don't keno how it will really go. I know I have to fast for 8 hours, I go in at 8:30 and then they will draw after one hour and after two. What I don't understand (coming from the wife of a type 1 diabetic) is why they take a whole vile of blood? My husband can prick his finger and get his blood sugar levels in seconds. I might take his glucometer with me so I don't have to wait for the results! They seriously don't need a whole stinking vile!

  • I had mine in Wednesday. I called Friday morning to ask how my blood levels were. When the nurse called back, she said that all the tests came back normal. I'm guessing they did more testing than just GD, but I'm not going to complain. Your test will go great too!!
  • I read somewhere recently that a lot of OBs are doing a 2 hour test instead of 1 and then potentially 3.  I guess because so many of the women who fail the 1 hour pass the 3 hour, the 2 hour gives them a better idea if someone actually has GD.
