Moms of LOs with eczema

How often do you bathe your LO?  I am confused because I read things that say to do it infrequently because it dries out the skin, which is what I've been doing (every 5 days probably), and then I read things that say to do it daily.  What works for you??

Also any recommendations at all for lotions, creams, soaps etc. are appreciated. My DD has had some mild eczema since birth, but especially with this winter in the northeast, it just seems to be getting worse now. Thanks!

Re: Moms of LOs with eczema

  • I bathe her a couple of times a week, unless she's messy. I usually don't use soap, but if I do I think it's aveeno. My nephew had it terrible, like bloody eczema and aveeno was the only stuff he could deal with.
With this nasty weather, I'm in MI so I feel ya, I've been using aquaphor. I use it for my skin too. I try to avoid her skin being exposed with these cold days. Her poor face just looks terrible the morning after errands.

Aveeno has a cream specifically for eczema and it works REALLY well. I put it on LO twice a day and the dryness and flakiness has severely cleared up.

Someone on a different board suggested about 2 times a week for baths. I had been doing it 3-4 and that was probably one of the causes of why his skin was so dry. My son is young though. With a toddler, since they get into things and what not, I would do probably every other day maybe? If the skin is still dry then maybe cut it down some.

Both of my kids see a dermatologist regularly for eczema. Per his recommendations they get baths on Sun, Tue, and Thur unless they are really dirty the other days. We only use plain white non scented Dove bar soap. They have a prescription shampoo to prevent scalp dryness. I apply ceravue cream (from the canister) twice a day. Then finally they have a prescription for locoid lipo cream which is like a hydrocortisone but can be safely applied long term several times a day all over the body or just problem spots .... I call it miracle in a tube, lol.

  • We do a bath every 2-3 days, only wash hair once a week (but he barely has any anyway). I really like Cetaphil Restoroderm, and he gets that on daily, sometimes twice. For bathing, we use BabyGanics Bye Bye Dry - really gentle and fragrance free. I've also found anything with fragrance sets off his eczema, so we wash his clothing alone with dye and fragrance free detergent.

  • I use Aveeno Baby wash every couple of days. I also use Aquaphor 2 times a day. Works like magic on G's skin.

  • I wash my kid everyday, but that's because they are a big mess!  I use Eucerin Eczema baby wash for soap and Aveeno Eczema cream at night.  Works well.  GL!

  • DS gets about 2 baths a week where we apply soup, then he gets about 2 showers where we just wash him off. He doesn't get that dirty in the winter. We also wipe his bum with a damp cloth every night to prevent diaper rash. In the summer we do more showers but only apply soup on parts of him that's really dirty. We use the Aveeno eczema cream 3 times a day and I use LOTS of it. We go through a tube like every 2 weeks. That's the only thing that has worked for us. If we applied less, he will get a flare up - then we use the prescription stuff.

We also have a humidifier on all night in his room.
  • My DS we bathe once a week. Aquafor makes a wash and Babyganics also does. After the bath we put hydrocortisone on the bad spots then covered all over with aqua for. Seems to do the trick.

  • We bathe every other day (DD goes to preschool and just get dirty/germy). We use the Cerave body wash and cream at the recommendation of the derm. Works wonderfully and prevents me from having to use the hydracortisone.

  • Burt's Bees all-purpose ointment is awesome! And hydrocortisone for really bad spots, twice a day.
  • Pediatrician told us a daily 5 min bath is supposed to help, but DS loves bath time, so I've been doing 10 min bath every other day. Cetaphil restoraderm twice a day has really helped, none of the other lotions worked for him.

  • my DS has mild eczema, too. as PPs have said, we try to not bathe him every day (tough because he loves baths/showers and wants to get in with us), only wash hair 2x a week, and use cetaphil non-soap cleanser. none of the lotions we used seemed to make much difference.

what worked the best for us was oatmeal baths. you can buy it in packets, but it's cheaper to just grind up rolled oats really fine (or use oat flour)-- put 1/2 cup or so in, until the water is cloudy looking. it cleared up DS's scaly patches and it's cheap!
  • I know this sounds strange but this is the ONLY combo that has worked! Coconut oil - 2x a day like a lotion. Put it everywhere, let them eat it, its perfectly safe as long as there is no coconut allergy. Bathe with Mustela. It is expensive but it is worth it if you ask me. We live high in the Rockies and this is the only combination that has helped my son. Also my nephew had terrible eczema that would no go away - even with steroid shots. My SIL switched to Mustela three times a week for baths and coconut oil and it was gone within 2 weeks! After a year or so, coconut oil will start to clog pores so we have now switched to avocado oil which seems to be working great. I bet you could alternate the two easily. The trick with eczema is to avoid lotions - they are mostly water and alcohol. You want a high oil content in anything you use after bath/between baths. Hope you get some relief!
  • My LO is bathed every 2-3 days. I use the Baby Aquaphor soap for her skin and hair. In the mornings and evenings I grease her down with coconut oil. At daycare they lotion her up before naps with the Baby Aveeno fragrance free lotion and/or the one made for eczema. When she get bad flare ups I do put some hydrocortosine cream on those areas. Everything we use on her skin is fragrance free and I wash all her new clothes before she wears them.
  • DD has pretty mild eczema, but is definitely exacerbated in this cold winter weather.
We bathe every night, but don't use any soap (we wash hair every night with Johnson's baby soap).
Daughter has lots of rolls that get red and rashy if they don't get rinsed and dried every day otherwise I would think about skipping baths.
We also LOVE the Aveeno eczema lotion and use all over after bath time, and then again in the morning on the trouble spots.  Seems to keep it at bay :) GL!
  • I give her a bath every other day most of the time. Sometimes every 2 days. We use aquafor (sp?) soap and aveeno eczema lotion.
