August 2013 Moms

I'm Back

I'm back from vacation and struggling to reacclimate to my surroundings. Coming home from 9 days on Kauai is a tough one. DH, the girls and I are all slumping around like we have the world's worst hangovers.

We did the 5 1/2 hour flight with a 23 month old and a 6 month old and it was pretty good. Traveled with frozen breastmilk and it was easy peasy. If you have been concerned about flying at all, just do it and get it over with. It's not bad at all really.

I missed you guys. Trying to get caught up. Looks like we had some weird newbs and such, so that's fun. Anything I just have to read because it is awesome? Hilarious? Heartbreaking?

I'm soooo sad about @RoosterMemphis moving, but I know we will keep in touch. :) She rocks my socks... but now I need to buy a bunch of stuff from her before she leaves town so I can save on shipping. ;)

@Revez - On our last day there I met a woman from Canada who just arrived and she had a baby who was born August 3rd. All I could think was, "Why can't you be Revez - Damn you!" (I realize that Canada is huge and millions of people had babies in August 2013 but it was still all I could think. Rational thought is not really my thing.)

Yay!!! I had a friend that just got back from Hawaii and I was super jealous because I thought she might run into you (and the beaches/warm weather/sun etc.). How's this for rational thought: I told H if we ever have to move we're moving to you. I may have even convinced him to take a holiday down there some time.

    ...I'm a very persuasive person ;)

  • Welcome back! I'm super jelly of your vaca, I hope it was a blast! Last time we went to Hawaii I threatened to not get back on a plane. I seriously considered just staying & becoming a bum on the beach.

  • @CourtJack - We did a lot of swimming and whale watching this trip. We went with my dad and smom. We traded back and forth with watching the girls while we swam/snorkeled. They watched them while we did an ATV thing in the mud which was awesome. We got disgustingly muddy. We are A LOT. Not looking forward to Weight Check In (bless me ladies, for I have sinned - and it was fucking delicious.) Honestly it went by in a blur. A great memory was the adorable young goose who followed my DD1 around at one of the resorts and a guy gave us food for the koi in the pond and he kept stealing it. It was something totally silly but I will always remember it. The first went bananas when we threw the food in and it sounded like a jet boat when they all got into a frenzy. The girls loved it.

Waimea Canyon is breathtaking. I can't even put it into words and pictures don't do it justice.

I highly recommend the ATVs, and my dad loved Ziplining. We whale watched from the balcony on our condo - it was amazing.

@LJUTCMommy - I would HIGHLY recommend Maui as a vacation destination with a baby. Fly direct on Alaskan or Hawaiian if possible. Do not fly out of Oakland on Hawaiian. The Hawaiian check in desk leaves a lot to be desired in terms of efficiency, which is sad considering what an efficient airport Oakland itself actual is. We saw tons and tons of women with babies on our previous trip with DD1. We ordered her a portable baby tent to use as a "crib" and sunshade and a floaty with a sun shade - both of which were awesome. (I can get you links if you want.) They have amazing beaches and protected ponds for babies. With all that said - be prepared for some SERIOUS loving on your little one by strangers. Everyone on the islands seems to love babies and are more than happy to help you but they are kissers/huggers/touchers. I'm happy to share my kids with kindly granny/auntie types under my immediate supervision, but I know some mommies are touchy.

The flight is no big thing. If you can afford it, the seat for LO is nice, but if you can't, it really isn't that bad to hold them.

I'm gonna PM you something that makes this a little funnier to me. :)

  • How fun!!! I'm so jealous. We haven't done Hawaii with the kids but we did Mexico in 2012 with DS and my ILs. Traveling with kids is best when you have family with you. :) Glad you had fun! Where are the pictures??
