I could really use some advice: Progesterone

edited February 2014 in LGBT Parenting
As you all know, we aren't happy with our RE. We just found out that the doctor we have been seeing in the RE's office is NOT an RE, which is why she is always consulting with the actual RE in the office. We are LIVID. We were never once told that she is an MD. We should have known (and this prompted us to actually investigate her credentials), when my wife asked her what the average growth for a follicle is per day. Her answer was "I don't know."

I'm really in need of some advice here. I ovulated on CD 21, which is very normal for me. My cycles average out to be about 34 days. This isn't a guarantee, just the average. They ran my progesterone on CD 26, only 5DPO, and it was 11. I was put on progesterone.

From what I am reading, they should have waited and tested me on CD 28, 7 DPO. Is this true? If so, are there side effects of taking progesterone if my levels would have been normal, had they taken them on the correct day?

Also, I did have a blood test done to check for pregnancy 12DPO and I was told it was negative.  I am 14 DPO and still no sign of AF. I was not advised on whether I should or should not continue taking the progesterone and was not scheduled for any other blood tests. I was just given a plan for next cycle. My temp has had a few drops, but it rose again today and has not yet dropped below the cover line. I'll attach my chart.

I'm so confused and lost at this point. I'm not sure I trust this office anymore and they want to put me on Femara with monitoring every other day starting with CD 10, followed by Ovadrill.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • I am sorry to hear that you are still having a difficult time with them.  I would be super frustrated and upset also!  I can't give you a lot of advice because I didn't temp or take any other medications besides Clomid.  I hope others chime in and are able to give you some answers.  Keep your head up chica, we are all here for you!

  • Thank you @trisholio. I'm incredibly frustrated and just don't know what to do. We really don't want to take another cycle off to wait for another RE, but at this point, I'm kind of at a loss. We gave ourselves a deadline and skipping another month of trying is not going to make things any easier.

It is perfectly OK to take progesterone even if it is not needed.  My RE often puts IUI patients on progesterone even if they don't have low progesterone, just because "it can't hurt and it might help."

Usually if you get a negative blood test for pregnancy, you are told to stop progesterone at that point.  I don't know why they wouldn't have told you that!  You won't get AF until you stop progesterone (typically) and your temps will stay up -- progesterone is what keeps them up in the luteal phase.

I am sorry this cycle was negative and sorry your clinic is not more helpful!

  • @ball.and.chain is correct. You won't get your period until you stop the progesterone. Once it is determined that you aren't pregnant, it isn't necessary. I'm sorry that you have had so many problems and that you got a BFN.

I know that your insurance doesn't cover the other office in your area, but I really would consider switching if you can make a go of it. You deserve much better care!

11/14/14 -  Second HSG shows that tubes are still clear and ute is looking good.

12/6/14 - Started BCPs in prep for IVF #2

12/22/14 - Saline u/s and endometrial scratch (All was clear and OUCH!)

    1/2/15 - Began stimming for IVF #2

  • Thank you all! I am so glad that I have access to such experienced people, because there is no way I would have gotten a hold of anyone at the office. I did a lot of reading and found that it isn't uncommon to take progesterone through 14 dpo, so I'm not too horrified. I won't be taking it tonight, so hopefully AF can show up and we can move on. Thanks again!!

  • For what its worth, my RE puts me on progesterone the day after my second IUI. She told me to immediately stop it once I got my BFN from a blood test. AF came a day and a half after stopping progesterone.
  • One more question: If you are on progesterone, is temping a waste of time?

    @rkbo, thanks!

  • One more question: If you are on progesterone, is temping a waste of time?

I quit temping once I was on any kind of meds as you aren't getting an accurate reflection of what your body is really doing anyway.  I still charted meds, AF, etc on FF to have a record of what happened during the cycle, but I didn't add in the temps.
