Hanging wooden letters above crib

Hi May Bumpies!

I finally bought the wooden letters for our nursery last night (basically everything but covering the blank walls is done), but now I need to figure out how to hand them above the crib. They aren't super huge (3-4 inches tall), and some of them are not really thick, so I don't think hanging them on nails would work. They are all a different font, I didn't like all of the letters in any particular font, so I just went with the nicest one from each.

I've been checking out Pinterest but nothing seems to show HOW the letters are attached to the wall. I've seen some hung with ribbon, but I don't know how well that would work with the "I" and "L".

Here are the letters, I will be painting them all turquoise. The walls in the nursery are khaki colour.

Thanks!

ETA: The picture wasn't showing, but now it's huge. I just can't win with TB today!

Can you use the command strips?

ETA: if they don't have the exact size you need, just buy big ones and cut them accordingly.

Do those hold really well? I'm half worried that a letter will fall off and hit the baby in the head at night or something. I know ... active imagination.

I've never had trouble.  We hung our diaper stacker using two of the hooks with the strips and it hasn't fallen once in the last 18 months and it gets pretty heavy when completely filled with diapers.  We also hang our Christmas stockings with them and fill them, and once again, haven't had an issue.  They are rated by how many pounds they can hold.

Those command strips are REALLY strong! We have a few in our bedroom to hang things and SO has his bathrobe hanging on it for months (def NOT a light robe either, it's that heavy weight terry cloth from LL Bean or something). Your letters would be just fine!

  • Command strips hold really well. The only time I've had a command strip fall is in the summer when it was raining and the windows were open so it got really humid in the house. But if you're worried, I'd say just make sure there's a bit of a gap between the crib and the wall, and if they fall, they'll fall straight down to the floor.

they hold so well, they will probably rip the paint off your wall when you finally decide to take them down.

  • Do they not have not have notches in the back for nails?
If not command strips are a good solution. Or you could screw an eyelet screw into the top to hang it from a small nail or ribbon.

  • Thanks ladies!

I will definitely try the command strips, they are pretty light weight letters, and we already have a bit of a gap between the wall and crib because we know we'll have an Angel monitor with cords to tuck back there.

  • We used command velcro strips on wooden letters that look bigger and heavier than yours.  They didn't move until DH pried them off.

  • I hung ours with coordinating ribbon :) looks really cute!
  • I will add in that I used command strips for photos at my last apartment and they held up well for a few months and then started randomly falling. But I think this was probably because my walls had a slight texture to them, so really probably my own fault for trying to use them. But hearing all the good results people have had I would agree with PPs about leaving a small gap just in case but sounds like you should be ok!
  • Mine are hung with string from something else decorative that we hung above, but they looked sloppy, so we used the Velcro (I believe it's made by Command) strips to attach them. DD is 20 mo and they are all still held there by the Velcro (the string isn't really serving a purpose besides decorative).
  • I was going to say command strips as well. We had hooks but the changing table that were hung with command strips, held up very well. And they didn't take the paint off the wall when we moved the furniture around and relocated the hooks.

  • Nail them to the wall and just dab paint on the nail to blend it in.
  • I agree with PPs on the command strips!  They're awesome!!

These are the same ones we used for my first son. Had zero issues the entire 2 years they were up. We moved and I plan on getting two large single letters one for each boy this go around.

  • Where did you buy the letters from? I want plain letters so I can paint them myself? The command strips are a great idea - I would have asked the same question eventually

Micheal's craft store. They had a whole aisle of different fonts and sizes, every letter and some fonts had numbers too.

They ranged in price from $2.49 each to $4.99 (the white, curly "O" was the most expensive font). But I had a 40% off one item coupon that I used for the $4.99 one :)  The "i" was on clearance so it was $0.79.

  • we have done command strips for two paintings we have that we couldn't hang with a nail, they have held up fine (been there for about 3 years now..)

But we have also used liquid nail for a shelf that we hung in the bathroom that no matter what we did, would always shift with nails in it. The liquid nail works great, but be prepared that if you go to take it down, your going to rip off the paint and possibly plaster

  • I think you can buy photo frame brackets and attach them to the back. And I would like to say I LOVE the name...but I'm a bit partial since that is DS's name. :-)

  • I've had issues with Command strips because it gets so hot here that they melt when they're on external walls (not actually on the outside of the house, but the walls that border the house). But as long as you use them on internal walls, you'll probably be fine.
  • Have you thought about buying the picture frame attachment pieces and using clear, plastic fishing line?  If you don't like the ribbons, this might be a different avenue for you!  LOVE those btw!

  • We used like a liquid spray glue stuff that ripped down the drywall when we went to redo the room. We won't be hanging letters on the wall for #3!

We will be hanging the letters on an exterior wall, so maybe with the heat in the summer the command strips aren't the best idea. I am liking the idea of the clear fishing line though.

  • I did letters on ribbon and I have both an I and an L I think they turned out ok. You don't notice the pegs are off unless you really look.

  • I have a make-up case that folds up and also has a hook to hang, with all my make-up and everything it can weigh up to 7 lbs - it hangs from a command hook and i have never had a problem with it.
