Protein shakes?!

Is anyone making protein shakes to help get more protein? My clinic had recommended it a while back but I went to target to look for protein powder yesterday and they all either say: do not use while pregnant, or consult your doctor before use if pregnant... Just wondering if anyone has found a brand that I safe in pregnancy?! Thanks ladies!!

Re: Protein shakes?!

  • My doctor said that protein shakes were fine (for me) as long as I didn't rely on them as my only source of calories for more than 2-3 days... I use the GNC brand ones but don't remember if they have a warning or not since the doc okay'd them.

  • My OB told me I shouldn't use protein powder because it has too much artificial sweetener and something about whey protein not being tested on pregnant women. I was so bummed! She recommended pre-made shakes such as boost and others that are sweetened with sugar. She also recommended protein bars such as Luna bars, zone bars, ect. She also gave me a recipe/ideas for making smoothies with Greek yogurt, frozen fruit and all natural fruit juice. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies! I need more protein and am having a hard time getting it. :/
  • I do fruit smoothies using Greek yogurt. I started using them as my bfast after DS was born before I'd complete a workout. I use a cup of frozen fruit or frozen berries, a cup of Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup of water, 1 tbsp of ground flax seed, 1 tbsp of raw honey. If you want extra protein do 2 frozen bananas, 2 tbsp peanut butter, Greek yogurt and ice.

One thing that was pointed out to me a while ago (first tri) was that flax seeds are not recommended while pregnant... and my doctor did agree on this because they just "weren't comfortable" with the information available currently to say that it would be safe...
  • I like Vega protein powder if you want to make protein shakes. There is grape seed oil in the powder so it is suggested that you consult your doctor prior to using it. Another concern with protein powders is the heavy metal content. A couple of recent, objective studies found higher than recommended levels of heavy metals despite manufacturing claims that it wasn't the case so just be sure to thoroughly research the powder you might use.

My OB told me to add flax?
  • MRM veggie protein... You can cook with it as well.
  • I am having a hard time eating. I have a strong dislike to all meat right now. I want to add protein as well. I found one with natural sugar but it has so many added vitamins. I am worried about overdosing on vitamins. I am asking the doc about it Friday.
  • I don't know if these count as protein shakes...but for awhile during the week I would have a Special K or Kelloggs chocolate shake for breakfast. (They call them protein drinks but I don't know if it's the same). Of course now I need much more food than that to make it to lunch!

Vega was recalled not too long ago for not disclosing potentially harmful ingredients. It's back on the shelves at whole foods now, but I'm not comfortable using it now that I'm pregnant.

I've done my own research on flax and I am comfortable using it in my smoothies. I also put chia seeds in my smoothies. It's a great way to get omega 3's.

  • Flax also "keeps things moving" which is why I have always eaten it...  ;)
  • Why not adding nut butters to smoothies for protein?
  • My MW and my certified herbalist had zero issues with my ground flax seed plus I have been using it in my smoothies for over a year now. I think it's just like with anything else, some doctors like it some don't. Use your judgement! With or without the flax seed using the fruit and Greek yogurt is adding protein to your diet in a healthy way! I have discussed different whey powders/ shakeology/vega with my practitioners and the ingredient list is too up in the air for us to agree so I know what I am doing now is natural and safe.
  • Thanks for all the ideas ladies!!
  • I use Garden of Life protein powder and love it. It's vegetable based, raw, and organic.
  • Gee....now I am thinking I should check my jar. I use the Synthrax line of sweets. The pina colada was good with juice. I am am using the chocolate truffle right now.

  • I drink the Visalus shakes. Like others said, I have trouble eating and protein products make me even sicker so this is how I get my protein. I haven't been drinking them as much now since I have been able to eat a little more.
