IUGR - here we go again

Sorry to be post whoring it up with all my recent drama. I want to post this in case anyone is looking for info about IUGR in subsequent pregnancies (when I googled, pickings were slim :) )

Anyway, I get my monthly growth ultrasounds since DD was IUGR. Baby was measuring smallish the last 2, but okay (18th percentile). Today baby measured in the 11th percentile. Doctor is going ahead with the IUGR diagnosis again. We won't talk about delivering early unless baby gets down into the 5th percentile.
Fluid levels are looking good. Low AFI was found with DD at 30 weeks which landed me in the hospital, so that will be really watched, especially with history repeating.
They had no explanation for the issues I had last time, so, so far no answers this time.
Anyway, I went ahead and found some cute preemie onesies!

  • I'm sorry Mama :(  Asher had IUGR but did end up being 6lbs, although could fit into preemie clothes.  He looked like a peanut compared to the other babies in the nursery.

How small was your DD when she was born?  Did she have to come early?  So far this baby is looking good for me, but Asher actually measured big until 33 weeks and then it was like no more growth until he was delivered.  It was weird.

He also acted like a preemie when he was born as far as Apgar scores, feeding and swallowing and maintaining body temp and stuff.

DD was delivered at 36 weeks due to distress. She surprised everyone and was 5lbs, but she was long - 20 inches. I mentioned that to the OB and she said sometimes IUGR babies surprise everyone and are 6lbs or so at full term, but sometimes they are barely 4lbs at full term. She said she has to go off the information she has which is showing a drop in growth. DD was in the NICU for low blood sugar. I really don't want another pre-term delivery (who does?).
I know what you mean about baby looking tiny small next to all the other babies, lol!

Here's to a grow, grow, growing baby! Although the preemie onsies are cute, I hope that you'll only need newborn sizes once LO arrives.

She sounds like a good size!  That us great maybe this one will surprise you too!  Asher was born at 40 weeks and was 6lbs and just about 19 inches which was a great surprise because we were told he'd be about 5lbs and 17-18 inches.  I love good surprises!

  • I'm sorry you're dealing with this again. I had IUGR last pregnancy, & was really hoping for a chubby baby this time. Unfortunately that's looking less likely for me, so I totally get the disappointment. Fingers crossed that your baby stays on track for growth!
  • Sending out T & P's! Hope everything goes well for you and baby <3

  • I hope your fluid levels stay normal! Sorry about the diagnosis but hopefully with monitoring they can keep everything in check. Thinking of you!

  • Oh no! My LO had iugr last time and was in 2.5 percentile at birth, but I had pre-e so I suspect the two were linked. My DS had feeding issues, too. Honestly, I am on a couple of iugr boards and so long as they get to about 3.5 to 4 pounds and aren't extremely preterm, they seem to do okay long-term. Hugs!

Have you been tested for underlying disorders like clotting issues? Was the placenta biopsied last time?

Yeah, it was biopsied, but didn't come back abnormal, it was just a small placenta.
I mentioned to the Dr. that DD was bigger than they anticipated and that maybe I just make small babies. She said that with the fluid thing last time and what not, she has to go off the info that she has now, which is pointing to IUGR. She said sometimes IUGR babies surprise us and are bigger and sometimes they are barely 4lbs. I'm not super worried. I think I just make long, skinny, small headed babies - but I guess we will see for sure in a few months!

I was dx with IUGR my last pregnancy, DD was at 4-5% the whole time, she was born at 38 weeks at 6lbs, so a good size and obviously no IUGR. Praying your LO stays above the 10% mark!
