Mastitis Question

Dr diagnosed me with mastitis. I have been pumping all the way through it because it's too painful for Mason to latch on. This is the fourth day of my antibiotics and I have noticed my milk supply is half of what it used to be. Is that normal for antibiotics? This sucks...

Re: Mastitis Question

  • That happened to me too. I kept nursing through the pain. My midwife told me to. Even though it hurt, it helped clear up quicker. My milk supply came back fully within a week!

  • I had heard that it will dip during and just after the bout with mastitis but usually bounce back afterward. Good luck!
  • I had this with DD1 use hot packs when pumping it will help with pain and let you pump more.

I was a feb14 mom but had LO jan 22.
  • Ok at least there's hope! I think it's partly the mastitis and partly his latch that is painful. I had him Jan 22 yet couldn't get an appt at the breastfeeding center until Feb 11! He will be three weeks old. That's a lot of feeding with a horrible latch. He's killing me!
  • Yes, it's likely the mastitis itself not the antibiotics that are affecting the supply. It should recover once you are well although BF would help to get it up faster.
And three weeks to get help from an LC is ridiculous! I know Feb 11 is around the corner but ideally you can see an LC within days of noticing an issue. I hope you get good help from them!

  • Thanks @AmyG* the only problem with breastfeeding other than the incredible pain is that the antibiotics are giving my poor little guy horrible stomach bubbling and diarrhea. As much as I hated to do so I had to switch to formula because he was in so much pain after eating. I have three more days of pills. I just don't see the point of going to see the LC if I won't even have any milk by then. This whole production has me very discouraged. I hate feeding him formula. That was not my plan.
  • Sorry this has nothing to do with the post...

BUT @quidditchcapn1120 I love your username. Amazing.

Same thing happened to me with my first son. the pain was unbearable to continue nursing so I used the pump on the infected side and nursed him on my good side. I made sure I was pumping my infected side every 2 hours. my supply did seem to bottom out but continuously doing this for a couple days helped it to come back. I put DS1 to the breast again as soon as the pain subsidedjust enough to be tolerable again. my issue to begin with was an oversupply and engorgement. for me, it was a blessing in disguise when my supply didn't quite come back the same as it was. Things actually were easier. Hope things sort out for you!
