Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby will only sleep on my chest.

She is 5 days old today. She slept okay in the hospital but now that were home she only sleeps on my chest. I can't swaddle for crap and she hates her arms being swaddled. Someone suggested I buy a rock and play for the angle. Any other suggestions? I need to get some sleep outside of my recliner (where she and I usually sleep)

Re: Baby will only sleep on my chest.

  • The RNP will definitely help. The first couple of nights at home, DH and I had her sleep on our chests in shifts...otherwise she wouldn't fall asleep at all. Throughout the first week we worked on having her nap in the RNP during the day and as much as possible at night.

Now she sleeps in the RNP all night and some naps on us, depending on the day and what we're doing. I also have a K'tan and she naps in that, too!

  • RNP is great for that. Also the Miracle Blanket, which is the swaddle for those of us who can't swaddle for crap. I used both with DS1 who was similar to your LO. DS2 (9 days old) so far is more laid back but he's been loving the RNP too.

  • We are big fans of the rock n play. But, it's also perfectly normal for her to want to be close to you. She's only 5 days old. She's used to a small, warm area. Enjoy those snuggles :)

  • I'm okay with the snuggles!! I just want something safer for her than my arms when I am sleeping

  • I used the Summer swaddle wrap from Target. My baby's 7 weeks now & still sleeps in one.
  • This last of the first two months for us. What I finally did around month one was just gave in and used my ergo baby carrier and strapped on.
  • I'm going through the same thing with our two week old. I just got a rock and play as well. Right now I'm trying to let him fall asleep on me and then transfer him to the sleeper.
  • My daughter hates to swaddle her arms so swaddle her aaround it. RNP works miracles. My LO loves mommys chest for bed time and sometimes I'm scared I may fall asleep with her like that I keep the RNP right next to me. Also my gramma suggested putting one of your shirts that smell like you under ur LO when she lays down, this way she can smell you and know your close by. I haven't tried it yet tho. Gl

  • RNP is a good idea.
Get a pod or sleep suit.
All babies fight their arms being swaddled, but if you do it tight enough they love it. They like the security.

Also, you are expecting a lot from a baby you just brought into this world 5days ago. These days go quick. Cuddle that baby!

I don't think I'm expecting much personally, I just can't put her down to even go to the bathroom, eat, etc. without her waking up. I don't feel like it's safe for me to sleep with her on my chest every night either. I let her sleep on me as much as possible during the day, but I do have basic needs to meet so I can care for her!

  • The rock and play saved my life when my son was a newborn! It was the only way I could get any sleep with him until he was 5 months old when we finally transferred him to his crib! Best $50 I think I've ever spent!

  • We're just about 6 weeks here and he still doesn't sleep on his own. I made a bed for us out of the couch for 4 weeks and I finally transitioned him into sleeping in my arms in bed with the co-sleeper at my side. Yes, we've tried everything - swaddling, RNP, swing, acid reflux meds. Clearly he's a mamma's boy.

I cannot wait until I can hold my husband at night again!

Dude, she's 5 days old (or older now). You try different things, but ultimately you do have to. It's very common that babies hate you to put them down. Eating, going to restroom & more are going to be problematic for the first 2-3 years of your kid's life.

Believe me, if you expected to sleep, eat or pee in peace with a newborn then you are expecting to much.

I get it, but ride it out.
