Name Opinions!

DH and I found out were having our first a last boy! We already have 3 girls lol We're trying to decide and agree on a name.

We've nailed down William, it's his grandfather's last name and we both love and adore him so we wanted to use his name.

We're stuck on the fist name. I really like Ty but only as a nickname. I'd like to be able to find a name that we can call him Ty for short, but I've been miserably unsuccessful so far! My FIL suggested Trestyn and call him Ty, it's incredibly unique and my DH loves it. Our other children have unique names as well but I'm not sold on this yet. We could use the names as middle or first names, William Trestyn or Trestyn William

Just wanted some opinions! (please try to be nice as I know it seems like a crazy name to some people lol)

Tyler is what comes to mine. I honestly hate Trestyn. As a teacher I would side eye it.

I love William. You could do Trestyn as a mn. As others said the name board loves a good challenge and they can usually think of some good ideas.

Is Trestyn actually Tristan (ala Legends of the Fall)?

If so, spell it correctly and nickname him Ty anyway. Changing the spelling to include a Y just because of the nickname is just awful.

We are doing William for a boy, so I am partial to that as a first name. I like the sound of William Tyson or Tyson William. I don't mind Trestyn, especially if you have gone with unique names for your other children. There may be some confusion with the pronunciation, but that's not the worst thing ever I guess. If you want the NN Ty, I would make whatever you go with the first name. Otherwise a version of William may end up being the NN for everyone other than you.

Tyson reminds me of the chicken nuggets. I agree with what other people say just name him Ty if thats what you like. I get shit for picking "Ellie" because its a nickname but i could care less.

UO over here but I like the name Trestyn if you pronounce it trest-in. When DH picked out DS name, I hated it but it grew on me and before I knew it I loved it. Still lots of time to make a decision though. Congrats on the boy!

It's actually the Celtic spelling of Tristan, so it is spelled correctly.

If that's true (I tend to believe Bliss on this one), then I stand corrected, and apologize.

That said, OP better get used to saying your bolded sentence, because every single time she mentions her son's name, that will surely be the next sentence to follow.

It's NMS and I would most likely pronounce it wrong. But I do think it's your's and your husband's choice to make. If you like it, go for it; but you'll likely get the same responses that you got here. I voted to use it as a middle name because I think it flows a little better that way.

If someone asks his name, you are going to say "Ty." Most people don't offer a full name on a daily basis. Before he's born, just say "his name is William Trestyn, but we will call him Ty" so everyone will know your intentions. There's no need to tell people (in a casual situation) that his first name is actually William, so I doubt anyone would shorten it. My name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Beth. I don't tend to have anyone call me by my full name except for drs, but that's only because that's what's on my paperwork and that's NBD.

As someone who plays, "How should I pronounce this ridiculous name?" on a regular basis, it never occurred to me that "Trestyn" was "Tristan" and not Tress-tin. If you give your kid that name, people will be rolling their eyes every time he corrects them...which he will have to do over, and over, and over, and over again.

Hrm, I would *never* get Ty as a nickname from Trestyn? I would prob go with Tre or something ridiculous since the sound isn't the same (unless I'm pronouncing it wrong)? Tres-Tine as a pronunciation sounds... complicated.

I don't care for it myself; I think there are easier and more obvious ways to get your desired nickname.

I'm not really a fan of the name Tristan, even when spelled normally. The meaning is sadness (French/Latin origin), and reading the legend of Tristan and Isolde is not exactly uplifting. It seems a heavy name for a child.

I like the name Tristan. If you name him that, I think you should spell it that way. Naming your child is a personal choice between you and your husband. There are always going to be people who may or may not like the name you give your child. You basically just have to go with what you and your husband feels fits you.

It's obviously your decision to make but, I do not understand why people try to find a different spelling for a name. Whenever I see this, I fast forward to when they have to make resumes and be taken seriously. I also don't get ty from that name. But again, it's not if internet strangers like them name, it's up to you and your husband.

Personally I don't care for Trestyn or get the nn Ty from it. There's also Tybalt .. another "different" name - I would like it better as the middle name, William Tybalt. I think William Ty sounds great just the way it is though

Huh. I'd love to know your source of that information, because everything I've seen says the Celtic spelling is Tristan and the Welsh spelling is Trystan and the name originated from the Gaelic name Drystan.

Agree with bliss. Also, it would puzzle me how that could be the Celtic spelling since I believe the traditional Gaelic alphabet does not have a "y" in it.

If you're dead-set on the name, hey go for it. Just realize you and your kid will be spelling and explaining quite often.
