Need suggestions

LO has had three ear infections in less than two months. I'm at a loss. She's been on amoxicillin, erythromycin, and now amoxicillin again. I'm just frustrated as to why they keep coming back. I don't nurse her laying down. She always has her head above her stomach. I'm worried that she's been on so many antibiotics in under two months, even though her pedi said not to worry.

Do any of you have suggestions as to what I could do to help treat and prevent these ear infections. TIA

Re: Need suggestions

  • I was like this. We had smokers in the house....I doubt that's your problem.

I'm not sure how to prevent them but my neighbor's kid had this issue bc of daycare and ended up getting adnoids removed and tubes put in and is fine now. Is it possible the antibiotics are not working bc it's viral? Can they test?

  • Try a chiropractor maybe? Some times that can help.

  • @Speshul I should add that they do go away after each set of antibiotics but they keep returning. As for it being viral I asked about that today and he said viral usually only lasts a week and she's going on two weeks. They also think she was starting to develop a sinus infection. It's just so hard to see them sick.
  • @soleil3 had a suggestion for a natural remedy.   You might PM her about it.  I am not anti antibiotics but like you I would be concerned with back to back infections.

  • I had chronic ear infections as a kid. I just had/have bad ears and sinuses.

I would ask the pedi about tubes and have them put in as soon as it is safe to do so.

  • Have you done anything to help with drainage/pressure? You don't want it stuck in there and then move to the inner ear. There was a previous post on homeopathic someone mentioned eardrops w garlic.

My family member is a doc and she recommends ear drops 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 Hydrogen peroxide or alcohol. I don't know if it's safe for a baby it was for me.

My gma put iodine in my ear as a kid for my ear infections, it was instant relief. I don't know if that is considered safe either but you could ask the doc.

This. Mine were not as often after smokers quit but I continued to have horrible sinus issues until I got my tonsils removed in the 8th grade. It was a life changer, I wasn't a mouth breather anymore and I could breathe when kissing boys.

  • Thanks everyone! I will PM Soleil for her remedy.
  • As another PP already said some kids just get them a lot. The only other thing I can think of that regularly causes them is mold exposure. Have you ever had your house tested? Does LO go to daycare?

  • @ktbug613 we live in a new apartment complex so I don't think it would be mold here but she does go to daycare. That is something to think about. Thanks.
  • @liylaRae daycare is the only reason I know about the mold link. The center I used to work at was found to have it and the infants were CONSTANTLY sick with repeat ear infections and runny nose/sinus infection type symptoms. Finally one of the babies doctors suggested having their home tested for mold. Come to find out it was our daycare center

  • My coworker's baby had issues with repeated ear infections and took her baby to a cranial sacral therapist. She found that the ear infections were getting spaced further apart. It's a certification so the therapist's occupation can vary OT, PT, massage, etc. if you go to upledger.com you can look up local therapists. Call to make sure they have ped experience. Good luck!

Now I'm going to get my house checked for mold because I'm freaking out.
  • As a child I would get ear infections from swimming underwater, especially lake water. Also sometimes from getting too much water in my ears while showering. My doc said we'd have to consider getting the tubes in if I had another and then they stopped for a few years.

Maybe your little one is just prone to them and it's being brought on by water too?? Just a long shot idea.

Have heard the tubes are a quick procedure and stop ear infections.
