night weaning and super early waking - suggestions please

Hi Ladies,

I recently night weaned my almost 2 year old DD.  She will only wake up once now in the night and goes back to sleep super quick after some snuggles.  The problem we have been having is that since night weaning she will wake up at 5AM demanding to nurse.  I started off just nursing her at this time since she made it through the rest of the night but I started seeing a pattern and noticed she started consistently waking up the same time and would then be up for the day.  (She used to sleep until 6 or 6:30) For the last 4 days I've been holding her off until 6 but she will cry on and off for an hour until 6 at which point I will nurse her and then we'll be up for the day.

I am tired of waking up so early and am wondering if I should just continue with what I'm doing and eventually she will get it or if I should try something else.

  • Do you think she might be thirsty? You could try offering her a sippy of water when she wakes so early (or even at the earlier night waking) to see if that might help.

  • We've been night-weaning DS2 (18 mo.) down to nursing just every 4 hours and he woke really early for a couple of weeks. In our case, it was tying to hunger and thirst. We allow a sippy of water in bed. If that doesn't cut it, DH has given him a small snack (sometimes just a few bites) and then he's willing to sleep again. With DS1, every sleep transition led to a two weeks of early mornings/general sleep wackiness.
  • It also might just be a coincidence. That was around the age mine started to wake really early (5 and sometimes a bit before) for the day. It sucks but they are just morning people. If it's 4 or earlier they will go back to sleep otherwise they won't.
  • Also - a tot clock, so she can see when she'll be able to nurse?

Tried that.  She tells me "no" and won't drink the sippy and cries for "nursies".

  • We had luck with my H offering warm milk in a sippy to get an extra hour or two. He would accept it as long as it wasn't me offering.
