Tricks to Help ME Fall Asleep?

Since the board is slow, I figured I'd post this question. I've been having the hardest time falling back asleep after LO's MOTN feeds. It doesn't seem to matter what time it is (1 am vs 4 am, etc.); I just lie in bed unable to shut my brain back off, sometimes for close to an hour. I have no trouble falling asleep at the beginning of the night and have never had this problem before, so I'm at a loss. Anyone have tips or tricks to help fall back asleep? I need that extra shuteye! TIA!

I've already got white noise (we live in the city, so it's essential to drown out random city sounds), but I'll break out the sleep mask that I have packed away somewhere!

I've seriously tried it - my mind always wanders before I fall asleep! Maybe I need to be more disciplined.

  • Try to start tensing and relaxing all muscles starting with feet and work your way up. Tense for a few seconds then release while deep breathing. This technique is called something but I dunno what. Also try to stay away from your phone and tv ( artificial light).

Progressive muscle relaxation. It works wonders :)
  • I have an app on my phone that I use. It's guided imagery, and even one w/ progressive muscle relaxation; I've never made it all the way to the end of it before falling asleep. It's called iSleep Easy

You are my angel, my darling,

    wherever you are."
  • Have your partner rock you....

Just kidding, I am in the same boat, so I have no advice. :(

Have you tried the magic sleep suit?

I wish they made it in adult sizes! It looks so cozy.

  • I think about things I have to do the next day it's exhausts me just to think of them next thing I know I am asleep
  • If I look at my phone when up because of a MOTN feeding I can't fall back asleep.

Try a journal if thoughts keep you up?

    Lavender?
  • This sounds strange, but it was a trick I used when I was pregnant and couldn't go back to sleep during the insomnia. I still use it now to help me back to sleep during the MOTN.

Picture the arrow and floor counter above the doors of an elevator, like this:

Envision the arrow slowly counting down from 12 or 15 or whatever number you choose. Slowly count down and picture the arrow turning. When it gets to 1, repeat the vision over again.

If I concentrate at this, it works like a charm.

  • My mom and sister swear by melatonin to help them sleep. I've never used it, but it might be worth researching.
"The cleaning, the scrubbing will wait til tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So, quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
  • I do this. It's going to sound strange. I've noticed that my brain can multitask amazingly. Like, three to five thoughts at once. Close your eyes. Imagine a ribbon dancer. The ones the spin the ribbons around, you know? Imagine her. Give her a routine. Every time you have a thought, imagine her swiping that thought away with her ribbon. All the while, counting. Just keep counting. This keeps all my thoughts in check and I'm able to fall asleep. It takes real concentration. I figure concentrating so hard helps you keep your mind occupied. Try it. Also, meditating helps me sleep.
  • Cry it out

  • Read a boring book. If I really can't sleep I go sleep in a different room. Sometimes that helps.

I'm not sure melatonin is safe to take if you're breastfeeding,  unfortunately. If you're not it does work wonders. My DH has ADD and has trouble turning his brain off to sleep. He takes melatonin and he's snoring within minutes. It only helps you fall asleep, though not stay asleep.

  • A shot if tequila! Lol! It always helps my sister. Ok, seriously though I just play with my phone until I can't take it anymore. That usually does the trick.

My DH is the same way - he has to be careful about scheduling his meds so they don't keep him up and takes melatonin to help him fall asleep sometimes. I am BFing, so I'm avoiding any meds/supplements that aren't safe.
