Donor milk question

As many of you know, my sister was a surrogate. She pumped milk for the baby while they were here. She now has a good supply going and has been freezing it. She asked if I wanted it for this baby. I know my sister is disease free by medical records. Is there anything special I have to do? I plan on nursing and pumping but the extra could never hurt right?

Re: Donor milk question

  • She would donate it directly to you?

If you are comfy using it, all you need is to make room in the freezer.

Check out kellymom.com for info on storage times, thawing and heating it up.

  • Health wise, there's nothing wrong with using it at all.  However, I'd caution you about introducing it to your LO until you're 100% sure you need it.  Everyone's milk has it's own unique taste and smell- in fact, the smell of your milk helps baby nuzzle his/her way to your breast and learn to latch properly when nursing.  Babies know their mom's milk.  If he/she develops a preference for your sister's milk, he/she may start to reject yours or refuse to nurse.

It's a wonderful backup plan if you decide you can't/don't want to nurse any longer, but I wouldn't take the milk until you know you need it.  Frozen milk can also taste and smell a bit like soap after its defrosted b/c of the lipase, and your LO may not even want that milk.

  • Also, not sure when she delivered but milk is only good for 6 months in the freezer, unless it's a deep freeze that isn't opened often. But if it's just a regular freezer at least half of it's life span will be used up while still pregnant.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • These are all very good points!!! She had the baby in January. And it's in deep freeze. So do you think I should have her donate what she has pumped up until I deliver? I just really really want this baby to be breast fed badly! Thank you all of these responses!

At the very least see if she can hold on to it until you can figure out if you'll need it.
