Some "WTF?" Things I've heard this week

"I would express from both breasts while drinking a couple of glasses of wine" - Now. Am I being crazy or is it totally not a good idea to express while drinking wine?

"When I was in labour, I was smoking pot on the couch to chill myself out before i went in"- my head exploded with that one.

Anyone else heard anything recently that's made them question if this is real life?

Bear in mind this is a woman who said she drank half a bottle of wine a night throughout both her pregnancies. Both her children just also happen to be in terms of growth and schooling.

If you are producing milk for a baby and drinking wine, the way to do it and have the absolute least amount of alcohol transferred to the milk is to drink the wine while pumping. I did that many many many times over the 9 months that I was pumping for DD. Yeah it sounds silly, but if you think about it it makes a lot of sense.

It really does make perfect sense - extract the milk before it is contaminated by alcohol. I'm looking forward to implementing this practice.

And nobody has an opinion on the pot smoker? Am I the only one who's mind was blown by that. Also the person in question smoked throughout both her pregnancies. Cigarettes and otherwise.

It just makes me wonder about all the "advice" we get

I just can't get it up for this, not that it's not flame-worthy, but it's her kid, she'll have to live with the repercussions, if there are any.

Her kids are fine, but i just don't know why she would want to take the risk. Then I wonder if I'm being too careful. Not that I'm about to light up at all! It sort of makes you wonder what's the point in worrying about caffeine when others are getting stoned when they go into labour.

I see your point. Some people just don't think like you do. Some people put their wants before the health of their baby.

while i think the pot smoker is a bit out there, i'm not about to go all Maude Flanders about it, since the chance of smoking once affecting her fully developed baby long term is incredibly unlikely. smoking cigarettes throughout pregnancy is WAY worse, IMO.

of course i also have pretty strong opinions about pot and don't worry much about caffeine.

Honestly I have wondered about some things that seem totally hypocritical during labour. I mean your not supposed to take anything but Tylenol for your entire pregnancy but when you're in labour it's totally okay to have morphine?

Yikes to the pot. I understand the logic behind the booze while pumping, but I'm a pumper and dumper no matter. It just makes me uncomfortable.

Actually drinking while nursing is the best time to do it. The alcohol isn't in your milk yet and it will be out of your milk by the next nursing session. That's what they told us in my BFing class, and I definitely had a glass here and there while nursing DD. That's fine if you're having 1 glass though, not half a bottle.
I'm perfectly fine with people smoking pot, but don't do it while pregnant or in front of your kid, yikes.

Alcohol leaves your milk after a period of time, there was something that came out about not needing to pump and dump because it leaves your milk in the same time it leaves your system.

No words for the pot smoker. Speechless over here about that one.
