Toddlers: 24 Months+

27 mos and still in crib. Big deal?

My son loves his crib, has never tried to climb out and sleeps a solid 11 hrs with one 2 hr nap. I don't want to rock that boat, but am just curious what others think about an older toddler still in a crib. Am. I missing something? Is there any reason he can't stay in it as long as he wants? Our one year old has only recently started STTN so we definitely don't want to unnecessarily trigger night wakings with our older. We are finally sleeping!

  • I don't see any reason to stop whats working for you. Honestly once they are out of the crib that opens up a whole new can of worms so I would count it as a blessing.

  • My babies will be 2.5 in 2 days and are not moving to big girl beds anytime soon. My oldest was in a crib until after 3.5 - my babies won't be in cribs quite THAT long!!

  • 27 mos is not old for a crib.  My DD just turned 3 last week and is still in her crib.  We have started shopping for a twin bed for her but haven't been in a hurry because she loves her crib.  I didn't see the need to rush it.

Keep them there till their ready.
  • DS was in his crib til 31 months. He transitioned to a queen bed so easily at that point. It was a breeze. Just do whatever feels right. There is no rush.
  • My 2.5 year old would probably still be in a crib if I didn't need it for the next kid. :)

This is one of those who cares things.

FWIW though, if you think he's ready for a bed, you could try. We had very little transition issues.

  • I WISH my kid was still in a crib.  He's 2.5 and he's been in a bed since about 13 months....

  • DS1 was in a crib til 3y3m and never complained or tried to climb out.  I didn't want to mess with a good thing!  Once he potty trained, we switched him so he could use the bathroom at night if he needed and he transitioned with no issues.  His naps did suffer a bit for awhile but with some consistent "quiet time" he eventually got back to napping 4 out of 7 days a week usually.  The other days he would just "read" quietly in his bed.

    Not an issue at all!
  • If you're fine with it, and he hasn't hit the weight/height requirements for your crib, I don't see why you'd need to move him.

  • If it works and you don't want to move him then I don't see the issue. The idea of my kids being in a crib past two is a little odd to me since both my kids crawled out around 1.5. They both had a super easy transition to a toddler bed. I have heard positive and negative experiences for both transitioning early and transitioning late. If it works for you go with it! The only issue I can possibly foresee is with potty training - the crib may make nighttime potty training difficult.

  • DD#1 has no desire to get out of her crib at over 2.5yrs old. She is potty trained both day and night.

Yup, me too.  DS has been in a toddler bed/converted crib since 17 months. Climbing skills, be damned!

  • Thanks everyone! I had just been reading a lot of posts about toddler beds and started wondering if we should be transitioning, We are all happy he is sleeping in his crib. I'll definitely heed your advice and not Rock the boat.

  • I say leave him be. DD is 32 months old and is still in her crib. I have no plans to move her at all, she hasn't even attempted to climb out yet (knock on wood!!)

  • We had to move ds around 2 bc he was switching rooms due to dd being born & giving him time to adjust before she was here.
Now that we are done having babies, ill probably leave dd in her crib as long as she wants. Why rock the boat? Plus ds waking me up at 5 am is getting old!!

    This exactly! Enjoy the rest.

  • Definitely not, IMO.  Our 27 mo old loves his crib and so far hasn't made any real attempts to climb out, plus, we have a 3 month old so we are in no rush to give him that freedom as long as he's happy.  We're watching for signs of him actively trying to climb out of the crib, then for safety reasons we'll make the transition.

  • I think it's no big deal. Do what works for you. My daughter would still be in a crib, except she potty trained and wouldn't call out if she needed to go potty while in her crib. This led to her going poop in the corner of her crib during nap time (ugh).

  • My daughter is almost 2.5 and is still in her crib. I have no plans to move her into a bed until she decides to climb out.

  • I don't think it's a big deal at all. As long as he/she is safe and doesn't climb out leave them until their ready!
We on the other hand had no choice because around 15 months my daughter started to climb out of her crib!

  • Our daughter is almost 2 1/2 and we have no plans to move her yet.  Maybe in the summer since we are likely to travel and have her sleeping in a big bed.  I don't see the rush yet especially since she isn't potty training either.
