Night Feedings

How often are you all feeding your LO's at night? Do you wake them up at certain intervals or let them sleep? I only ask because DD slept 6 hours and 30 minutes before stirring and wanting to eat! Part of me is thinking, "Yay! LET her sleep! She will wake when she is hungry!" and the other part of me is thinking, "She NEEDS her nutrition. I should wake her at least every 3-4 hours."

Let me know your thought!

Re: Night Feedings

  • I don't wake her to eat. She's done a few 5-7 hour stretches at night over the past few days. Last night was the first time she did 7. My pedi said that after she reached her birth weight I don't need to wake her to eat.

  • I've been letting her sleep. She hasn't gone more than 4-4.5 hours yet, though. I feel like a million bucks after four hours of straight sleep...never thought I'd say that!

  • Ditto the others. We've done 4-6 hour stretches pretty much since birth. Except for last night, wich was every 2-3. I'm tired :(

  • My pedi said once she got to birth weight ok to stop waking at night but make sure to go no longer than 3 during the day.

  • I don't wake LO up.  He will wake up every 3-4 hours to eat.  I'd love it if he would sleep 6 hours!

  • I don't wake him to eat unless it's been several hours during the daytime. At night he either wakes me every 2-3 hours or I'll get lucky and he'll only wake up twice (then again when DH is getting home). It's been like that for awhile and he was past birth weight at the pedi's so I guess it works.

6 hours though! Can't wait for that.

  • Ditto on the birth weight and not waking. I still wake up though due to full breasts. If she looks like she's stirring I'll feed her, otherwise I just get up, pump, and go back to bed until she gets up.

  • At 4 weeks- she goes to bed about 9ish, wakes up around 12:30, 2:30-3, and between 5:30-6:30. But she only nurses for 15 minutes max, and falls back asleep. Her best sleeping occurs between 7 am-11 am. Then she nurses every 2 hours or so through out the day.
  • LO has days and nights slightly off, she does her 5 hour stretches from 8 pm to 1 and then 6 am to 11. Will be up every hour in between that though. Waiting for those two stretches to be pushed together.

  • LO usually sleeps from about 10:30 to 2 and then until about 6. She has had a few longer stretches but I am BF so if I let her sleep too long, I get engorged and uncomfortable.

  • Usually Creed cluster feeds before bed, he goes to sleep for the night around 9-10, then wakes up around 1-3 depending on the night. I don't bother waking him anymore...he's well above his birth weight at 4 weeks. After his long stretch of sleep he wakes up again about 5 and 7 to eat and then we get up for the day around 8-8:30.

  • Every 3 hours for my kiddo. He did go 4 hours once last night. We don't wake him, he wakes us up. :)
  • Jude soared past his birthweight, but has yet to go longer than 2:45 between feedings. He is so loud with his breathing and stuffiness at night, that after the two hour mark, I am sleeping so lightly and nervously, I wind up feeding him at the first signs of stirring.

Ugh, this! Going on 4 weeks with no sleep and I'm officially the walking dead. Let's hope our LO's start to sleep a few more hours through the night ASAP!

  • DS2 will usually sleep for a 2 hour stretch starting at 11pm, then for the rest of the night he nurses every 1.5 hours.  It was the same with DS1 at this age.

Mine was doing this now I undress to fully wake her up feed, change to wake up, feed again, dress, sometimes feed again if she wakes. This helped to make her sleep longer.

  • Wow I wouldn't know what to do if he slept 5-6 hours! It was a wonderful 4 hrs the first week, this week it's 2-3 hrs between feeding times.
  • I would let them sleep. My pedi was happy that she sleeps through the night once in awhile. With that said, last night was the first night in two weeks that she slept for 4 1/2 hours. She would have slept longer if SO didn't kiss her good bye before he left work. That was a glorious sleep.

This is exactly my situation as well!

  • Right now, we are in our 3 week growth spurt. During the day she will sleep for about 2 hours between feedings, cluster feeds from 7-12 pm, will sleep until 3, and then cluster feeds again from 3-8. 6 hours of sleep at once sounds like heaven on earth. I'm one exhausted Momma!
  • Whenever mine sleeps more than 2.5 hours my boobs want to explode. Then I end up waking him anyway.

Last night he was pushing 3 and I thought I might die. Then he only wanted one size. We dozed back off and my other boob was like a rock. I really need to get my pump ready to go in our bedroom to at least take the edge off.

Mines younger than most here though, only 10 days.

  • DD is four weeks old and sleeps about 4 hours in between feedings at night. She tends to cluster feed between 9pm and 1am [i just figured out that's what's going on with her...she's been restless during that time for a week or so during that time and wants to eat every hour], then she'll sleep until about 5am. My boobs are killing me if she sleeps longer than four hours at night. During the day, she doesn't go more than 3 hours without eating.

  • DD is 6 weeks old and eats every 2 hours throughout the day, then goes from 9-2 am then 4-5ish and 6-7ish. Once she went from 9-4 and it was glorious! She is EBF and has really set herself up on this schedule.

  • DS is 4wks today. He has done 4 hr stretch, but not so much recently. For him, he will sleep like 930-1 and then is up every 1.5 hrs for 45 min. What is he doing during that time? Pooping. He isn't interested in eating (or sleeping) but needs to be moved around to poop. He doesn't poop much in the day, so it's like he is saving it for night.
  • LO wakes up naturally every 4.5 hours. He used to wake up every 2.5-3 so I'll take it. He's above his birth weight now so we let him sleep until he wakes us. During the day, we wake him if he makes it to 3.5 hours without feeding.

I will throw a parade when he sleeps a 6-hour stretch.

  • My son was going 2 hrs between at night... At most. Now he has been doing every 45min at 3 1/2 weeks- wtf? Major awful back tracking!
  • Kaleb is almost two weeks. He wakes up about 2-3 hours except Tuesday and Wednesday was every hour. And now my boobs are producing waaaay to much. They are so sore and I can shoot it in a stream like a water gun. But im pumping and vreast feeding. If they are too full he wants nithing to do with the boobs. Lol. But I'm hoping he's caught up to his birth weight.
  • Let the baby sleep! Callum has been sleeping a little longer between feedings because he is eating more during feedings. He is up to 4 ozs already!
  • Once baby has reached their birthweight there is no need to wake for feedings. I might during the day, but at night, no way!!

DS3 is still waking pretty consistently at 3am and 5am to eat (after his last feeding at midnight.) I would LOVE it if he would sleep for 6 hours!

  • Lexi was almost 10 lbs at birth. She at 2 weeks was back at her birth weight plus 5 oz. She sleeps 4 h at night (midnight-4am) then cluster feeds till 6 am. Last night she slept 10pm-4am, even though I woke up because of my let down I let her sleep, and eventually feel asleep myself. Enjoy your sleep!
  • So I now realize when Avery sleeps 6-7 hours, its soooo incredibly hard to get her to go back to sleep! She is wide awake for 3+ hours....I cried lol!
