Where was your LOs first tooth

I know not all babies have popped their first tooth yet. On pinterest (dr.internet) showed that normally the first teeth are the front bottom or front top teeth. You can see a tooth almost out on G's top left (I think incisor?) I was just curious where your LOs first tooth was if it popped.

In searching to see if this topic was covered I came across this post: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12107564/first-tooth-and-handedness

Personally, we haven't seen any dominance shown yet for either hand. Have you?

Re: Where was your LOs first tooth

  • No teeth yet, but as far as dominance on sides, it's definitely his right. He'll catch himself with his right hand if he starts to fall. He grabs the spoon with the right hand too. I actually try and encourage him to use his left more too. I'll purposely put things towards his left side to make sure he works that side out just as much. In the long run, I bet he'll be a righty.

  • If you noticed a hand dominance at this age it would be a huge red flag and you would want to bring it up to your pedi. Babies should use both side equally. Most do not cross the midline yet, so they will reach with whatever side the desired object is on (most of the time). No teeth yet, but my other two cut bottom front 2, followed by top 2.

LO switches between favorite hands a lot, some days it's the right and others it's the left. But she always sucks her right thumb. And she just got her bottom right tooth, and has now proceeded to bite me twice when she is nursing [-(
  • Bottom middle two teeth came in at the same time.
  • No teeth yet here but with DS1 he got the two bottom middle teeth first, and he is right handed. Though he swings a bat and a golf club left handed.
  • No teeth yet. With DD1 her first teeth were the 2 front bottom followed by the 2 front top. BF with baby teeth is not fun!

  • We have had the bottom 2 teeth in the middle pop already....with the top 2 working on it (lord help me). I have not paid attention to her hands.

This exactly. The big one is a righty but will do some sport related things lefty and righty.

As a lefty, I'm pulling for one of the babies to be lefty. I can't be the only girl AND the only lefty in the family ;)

  • Both of my girls showed hand dominance early early on, and they

This actually isn't true at all. Most babies will start to show a preference around 6-9 months, but it doesn't mean its their dominant side for sure until around 2 or 3 years. Its if they are only using one side, ever, through around 18 months that it can be a concern.

Both of my daughters had their bottom teeth come in first although I don't remember which one. It seemed like they both came in at the same time lol. And both favored their right hand early on.

Little dude still hasn't cut any of his.

  • We're the ultimate special snowflake here. LO has no teeth yet, but DS1 got his upper incisors first. He looked exactly like a baby vampire. He's almost 2 and still uses both hands equally. Weird kid. ;-)

  • Patiently waiting for the first to show...and DD is a couple days shy of 7 months! :-)
  • N's bottom left (when you look at it bottom right) tooth came in first.  It seems like he prefers his left hand but he uses both pretty regularly.

    My baby is ONE!!

  • Bottom left from her point of view. Then bottom right. My husband got his incisors first and was a vampire baby.

  • Bottom left then less than two weeks later we got the bottom right. He is pretty ambidextrous at this point.  Daddy is a lefty and hopes DS is too.

PS When I saw the title of this post I wanted to be a smarty pants and say his left butt cheek.

  • DS had his two middle bottom teeth already. It also looks like he has one possibly coming in on the top kind of to the side.

  • I thought for sure DD1's first tooth was going to be a canine. It ended up being the bottom left one.

Up until a year ago I thought for sure she was going to be a lefty. Now she's clearly right handed.

  • The gums over her left bottom incisor are starting to bulge, so I think that's where we'll be getting her first tooth.

As for dominance, it changes everyday, so we'll see.

While it might not always be the case, in the field I work in, we would consider hand preference at this age a red flag. More often times than not, there is a weakness on the other side.

I do agree that I would have more concerns about an 18 month old, but would also be concerned about an infant with side preference. It would be at least worthy of taking a closer look.
  • Front 2 bottom teeth at Christmas (4 months), and I think he uses his left hand a lot.
  • So I THOUGHT a new tooth was coming in but the doc took a look and said its just an epstein peal. Oh well!

  • I felt the first tooth tonight when LO grabbed my finger and shoved it in his mouth and chomped down! I was excited and terrified at the same time! It was sharp!!!! :) It was his bottom left, but no signs of dominance yet that I've noticed.
  • No teeth here yet. My first two got teeth around 9 months. Front bottom 2 first, then top.

Claire uses both hands, I haven't noticed her favoring either yet.

  • No teeth yet for my A13 baby, but DD1 got her (first) bottom front two a week before her first birthday.
