Starting Clomid: Anyone else?

So my husband and I have been TTC for over a year now. #3. i have 2 previous children from a previous marriage. I conceived them both on BC. We went to the doctor. Turns out that I just haven't been ovulating. But i have been having pretty normal cycles otherwise. 25-29 days. Also progesterone levels are low. The doctor is starting me on Clomid this next cycle. 50 mg CD 3-7. Then i will get another progesterone level checked on CD 21. Waiting for my period at the moment. my husband has twins that run in his family. The doctor also told me that Clomid increases your chances of multiples.

Questions:
1. How many cycles did it take before you got your BFP?
2. What dosage were you on?
3. Any bad side effects? If so, what were they and how long did they last?
4. If your husbands family has twins are you more likely to get pregnant with multiples while on Clomid? Like even higher chances?
5. Did you have a singleton or multiples?
6. What else should I expect?

Any input would be great! TIA!!

I'm going to assume (though I hate doing that), that since you mentioned a CD21 progesterone draw, that you are seeing an OB rather than an RE, correct? Are you being monitored otherwise? Clomid needs to be monitored closely while you're on it in order to ensure that you're responding appropriately. Considering that Clomid can increase the number of follicles in a cycle, your chances of multiples increase. When you're monitored properly, the RE will be able to tell you how many follicles you have, how mature they are, and when the best time to time intercourse is, or when to do an IUI.

Seeing an RE is very important, as an OB will not normally perform the necessary testing prior to prescribing Clomid unfortunately. Even if you're not ovulating properly, there could be any number of issues otherwise that might be hindering your getting pregnant. (For example, we knew that I wasn't ovulating properly, but with proper testing, we discovered that we also have MFI and autoimmune issues.) You could very well be wasting your time and emotions, when you could be getting what you really need somewhere else.

As for success stories, you might want to check out PIAF or SAIF. The majority of the women here are still TTC their first (and have moved on to IVF ICSI for the most part as well). There are a few exceptions (myself included), but you'd definitely have better luck there! Also, the TTTC board has alot more ladies at the same point in their journey as you too. They would be able to guide you through the testing process and TI with Clomid, as they're right in the thick of it at this moment, as opposed to having moved on from that point by now.

    ETA: Good luck!

  • I'll second everything @tptbabe said.  Also, please add a warning to the title of your post to indicate that there are children mentioned in your post.  The warning is also necessary if you post on Trouble Trying to Conceive.

However, I have taken clomid twice.  Neither resulted in a pregnancy.  With proper monitoring, you will greatly reduce the risk of multiples especially high order multiples.  I didn't find the side effects to be that bad, though I got a yeast infection during both cycles.

    Good luck.

  • Ditto everything the other ladies have already said. It's a terrible idea to take Clomid without all of the proper monitoring and it doesn't sound like this doctor is offering that to you. Please don't risk your health and fertility and go see a competent doctor.

And no, twins "running" in your husband's family will not increase your chances of having twins whether you take Clomid or not. That's not how it works.

    Good luck.
