Suggestions for swim vest/float for 21 month old?

Does anyone have a preference when selecting a swim vest/float for their LO? I'm looking for something that she could wear in the water and stay afloat with little support from an adult (with us next to her of course!!)  My DD is 21 months old, but very little when compared to my older daughter. My older daughter was big enough for a puddle jumper at this age, but not my second daughter. She weighs 22 pounds.

Any suggestions?

  • I was going to suggest the puddle jumper until I finished reading your post.  They say they are for kids up to 30 pounds.  LO could still use one.

  • I had trouble finding one that fit all my needs. We go boating and he's been on the jet ski, so for that I have a BodyGlove Toddler Neoprene vest with collar. For down by the lake playing a Puddle Jumper. For swimming a Speedo Begin to Swim which does NOT flip him to his back.

We just got home from the pool and there he doesn't wear a vest. I have a small inflatable ring that he holds on to or he can let go of.

You might just need to by a couple to meet each situation. But if its just a bit of assistance while in the water with an adult and you aren't comfortable with just a ring or wings then I'd say something like the Speedo Begin to Swim.
  • I have been trying (with no success) to find something similar for my 21 lb 17 month old. We have a ring type floater from last summer but he always wanted to get out and wanted us to let him go if we were holding him.

  • Yeah the puddle jumper is great, I just think she's a little too small.

    Thanks for all your suggestions!
  • Thanks for the tip DawnLilly. I need something that I can take on an airplane though. While I could pack this, I'll have nothing to inflate it with once we arrive!
  • DD is small (weight-wise) for the puddle jumper, but her infant life vest was getting too snug. We bought the puddle jumper and it fit her just fine. We just use it in the pool and she is always supervised anyways...

  • Thanks! Maybe the puddle jumper would work. It's not like DD will be swimming solo anyway! :)
