When do the long stretches start again?

Ugh...LO got up again after 3 hrs like clockwork, but I changed her and she literally nursed for two minutes and then fell back to sleep. If you're gonna get me up, at least get a belly full, girl!! Come to think of it, she did this last night too. Every baby is different I know, but when did those of you getting good chunks of sleep notice the long stretches consistently start? I honestly can't remember when DD1 did it. LO is 7 weeks today (and EBF, which I'm sure makes a difference in how long she's sleeping too).

  • EBF here. She cluster feeds from 4-7 then sleeps about 4-5 hours, wakes up and nurses, then back to sleep another 4-5 hours. Right at 2 months this started.

  • Like you said, every baby is just different. DS started doing 6 hour stretches at 8 weeks, and remained consistent. Started STTN around 12 weeks. DD1 didn't consistently do 4-5+ hour stretches til 7 months, and didn't STTN til she was 1. This LO has been doing 4+ hour stretches since 4 weeks. Right now(9 weeks today) she averages 6 hour stretches, and has done as much as 8 hours. I've done nothing differently with the kids in terms of their sleeping.

Hope your LO sleeps longer soon!

  • @KFiori1 - see, that scares me a bit...while I can't exactly remember when DD1 started sleeping well, I know it was by 3 months. If this LO is a bad sleeper and doesn't STTN till she's one, I may crack up from the sleep deprivation! I'm kinda hoping the brief 2nd wake up is turning into her realizing she can sleep a little longer before needing to eat again...

yeah, I won't lie, it was pretty brutal with DD1. Which is why I wasn't worried at all about how this one would sleep-I knew it couldn't get any worse! lol But if your LO happens to be like my DD1, you'll get through it! You just kinda get use to it because you have to! But she is still little, I wouldn't worry just yet :)

Be careful of that "couldn't get worse" stuff! Unfortunately, it can always get worse. DS1 was up every 40 minutes from 3-6 months. It wasn't until we finally let him CIO (after trying everything else we could think of), that he finally broke that pattern.

yes, DD1 was up 2-4 times a night at 6 months, and she'd be up for 2 hours at a time. We had her CIO at 6 months but that still only got us 4-5 hour stretches.

Ben is over 9 weeks and he's up every 2 hours OR LESS.  I'm getting at most 1hr 15 mins of sleep at a time, I'm struggling.  Dr thinks it might be a reflux issue, so he's been on zantac for a few days to see if it helps.

ETA my first was sttn by 12 weeks and ds2 woke up once per night, around 2am for a loooooong time, probably almost a year.  But once/night isn't that bad.  I guess Ben is trying to make sure he never gets another sibling.

  • E is almost 8 weeks and started sleeping consistent 6 hour stretches about 3 weeks ago when we started our bedtime routine. He is now doing 7-8 hour stretches. I moved his routine up an hour earlier and that's when the longer stretches started.  He goes down around 9ish, up to eat at 5ish, and then up to eat again around 830-9. Sometimes I can get another hour if I bring him in bed to snuggle with me.  We are FF.

If we skip or change up bedtime stuff, he doesn't sleep as well. But he's so used to it now,  he may stay up another 45 minutes after I put him down but he just hangs out and talks to himself.  He doesn't nap well during the day usually though.  Not sure how long this will last!

  • My LO is 6 weeks old and has been sleeping 5-7 hour stretches now. We do a bedtime routine staring at 9pm where we move to the nursery, change into her jammies, give her a bottle (2oz) of pumped milk, change her diaper then I nurse her with the lights off and white noise on until she falls asleep. She also still sleeps in the rock n play.
  • My LO is 7 weeks old and had been doing some 4 hours stretches of sleep during the night ... And all of a sudden during the last few nights he won't go longer than 3 hours, and he has even had a few nights where he was up every 2 hours. So sad :( I'm hoping it's just a phase and the longer stretches start again. He's been going to sleep consistently at 11:00 ... Which is better than the 1am he had been doing before ....
