Refusing bottle feeds

DD has been formula fed for several months and has started refusing them over the past week. She drinks at most an ounce at a time unless it's bed time. If I try to force it she screams and throws herself. Is this to be expected after they've been on solids for a while? At this point my more concerned with her becoming dehydrated.

Re: Refusing bottle feeds

  • Have you tried changing the nipple size? My LO did this a long time ago - she just stopped drinking and would cry and cry but act hungry.  We went up a nipple size and it took a few days but she didn't have any problems after that.
  • Loading the player...
  • We tried recently and she choked. She still dribbles occasionally on size one. It's more that she's upset we've disturbed her playtime. She doesn't act hungry and the moment we put her on the floor she's happy. The only time she'll take more than an ounce is bedtime.

  • How much is she eating for solids?  My son isn't a champ bottle drinker either but an ounce at a time would concern me enough to talk to the doctor about what can be done.  I'd try a sippy cup or hell, a syringe.  Maybe a different bottle altogether.

  • My daughter did this. I found if I give her a toy or something to distract her hands with then I can get her to eat some more.
  • @elmoali she eats twice a day can't really say how much in a sitting since I've jus been giving her what I have and it varies plus a few happy puffs or Yums through the day. We have three different bottles and it's all the same.

    @kari.sandall I'll have to try a toy

    @kdc2007 yea she hasn't decreased in soiled diapers

  • Thanks ladies. I think I'm going ti call the pedi to see if he'd want to see her tomorrow. It makes sense that she'd cut down because she loves to eat but it's pretty dramatic

  • I agree with the ear infection thing. LO has one currently and these symptoms are the same. I always heard that they tug on their ears, but LO never did that. I would lay him down to change him and he would scream, fuss, try and roll over. Then when I would give him a bottle he would take it out and put it in. He used to suck his bottles down but after a few oz he would toss it and then want it back, toss and want it. It was a viscous cycle.

  • @Ciahanna Does your Pedi know you're changing the calories of the bottles you're giving Gia? Just making sure :)
  • Today she's miserable. I'm waiting to hear back from the nurse. Now she doesn't even want her Yums and that's very strange.

    @kelly422 It's what a previous pedi told us to do.
    That's interesting because formula companies say absolutely not to do this because the balance of minerals has to be offset by enough liquid so their kidneys can process it correctly.  Maybe just run it by your new pedi to be safe?

    Agree with discussing this with your new Pedi.

    Aw I'm sorry :(  But the good (?) news is that it sounds like she's sick but that's an easy fix.  Trying to force feed a kid who's decided for no good reason they don't want to, that's a PITA.  Hope she feels better and is back to her normal self soon!

  • Ok so they're sure it's this stomach virus going around. I'm to give her pedialyte for the rest of today and diluted gentle formula for the weekend
