3d ultrasounds

When (in your opinion or experience) would you recommend having one done? DH and I are looking into them and the only place in our area does packages based on how far along you are. So what do yall think? I'm in no rush since we just saw our LO yesterday at my anatomy scan, I just don't want to go too early.

Re: 3d ultrasounds

  • I had an elective one done around 30 weeks with DD and did not have one done with DS (though I had a random 3rd tri u/s at the OB and they turned on the 3D machine).  I felt like the one I had with DD was really cool and worth the money, but I did not feel like I was missing out by not getting one with DS.  30 weeks was a good time because she was getting some fat on her and looked like a baby, but was not super cramped.

  • I had an elective one with DD and I think they said 26-30 weeks was ideal. My OB does them every appt and I can tell you they look creepy right now. By 26 weeks they will have put on weight, so no longer skin and bones. I think after 30 weeks it gets too squished. Can you ask the place what the ideal time is for one?

  • @MrsP419 Thanks! This helps a lot! I wanted to make sure we picked a time frame for when baby won't be such a tiny skinny thing and actually has some meat on his bones lol my cousin had one done around 25 weeks and her baby looked so little and thin. So I was curious as to around when they start getting some chunk.

@LegalLadyBug I did ask and they said between 25-32 weeks... but that seems like such a big time frame to me. So I wanted to know what other moms would recommend.
  • Personally I am not going to have one. They are creepy and not necessary. I get why someone would want to though.
    Twinsies...

I get a lot of scans, and the tech frequently switches to 3D to see if she can get a good image.  But they're usually creepy because any movement makes it blurry.  My last one, I see that I apparently have a pig baby in there.

I wouldn't pay for them.  Ever.

  • 25-32 weeks is an ideal time to get one done. I would wait till baybe closer to 30 like 29 weeks for the best pictures. If you wait to long the baby will be too big. Also once they flip you probably can only get profile pictures.
  • I don't want a 3D. I think they're unnecessary and they kind of creep me out.

We chose to schedule an elective to find out the baby's gender since they said at my A/S that its not medically necessary to know, instead of a 3D even though DH wanted one. He wants to know the gender more than what baby somewhat looks like. I told him we either find out gender or get an idea of what baby looks like, but not both because I want somewhat of a surprise at baby's birth. (:
  • At my a/s I asked them to "flip the switch" to 4D. They did, but said at 20 weeks we wouldn't see much - and we didn't. She said I would get a 32 week ultrasound and they could try then, and it would look better.

  • Thanks for the input ladies! I know they're not necessary, but to each their own! I didn't do a 3d ultrasound with DS#1 because DH also thinks they're creepy, so he talked me out of getting one. But now I've been looking into them again and want one just for fun. I get why some people think they're creepy, but to me, it's just looking at my baby :) ... I'm still debating on whether or not to get one, mainly because I know it is just for fun. But I think the experience would be cool. Thanks again yall!
  • My Dr does them and at our last appt (18 weeks) our DS looked like Skeketor. It was creepy. Tech said they look best as you are just going in to the third trimester. Going back in for a follow up anatomy scan at 22w 2d tomorrow. I'll let you know how he looks. But, if you are gonna pay for one, I would wait till they fatten up a bit :-)
  • If you really want time frame narrowed down, 28 to 30 weeks is the best. All depends on baby's position though, which we can't control.

  • I just asked my US tech at my 20 w scan, she said around 26-30 + I believe since that is when they have more weight on, they look more real and not all skeleton.

I want to get one done too so I am hoping at my 27 w scan I can ask her. ( hubby thinks they are creepy, alien like so I told him he doesn't have to watch) lol

  • My MFM center has 3d capability on their u/a machines so they turned it on for both my a\s and my nt scan. It was actually pretty neat. At 12 weeks he looked like a gummy bear, at 21 he looked like a lumpy baby. Just keep in mind that while they're adjusting the image you'll see a lot of lumps/bumps/blurs that aren't really there. That can freak some people out. At one point my son had a horn. But once she got the image adjusted right it was awesome, you could see eyes and lips and cheeks. I totally recommend it. They do say not to come in too late, since when the baby is bigger it doesn't have as much room to turn around and they have a harder time to get a good picture. Maybe 25-30 weeks is ideal?

  • My DH bought me an elective US package for my birthday, which was really exciting. The first scan was at 17 weeks, and it was mostly a gender reveal, but we did get some 3D pictures. They were a little freaky, but I love them because it is my LO. I go back in for 3D later, and the tech/owner recommended 27-30 weeks. She said the ones on their website and hanging on their walls were all done in weeks 27 and 28, and they were all her friends. I looked at it like a treat - we get two "photo shoots" (as my hubby calls it), we got to have my MIL and mom with us (they were really excited to get to be involved), we have CD's and DVDs, and we got a recording of the heartbeat. I think the recording is my favorite part. We have transferred it to this plastic heartbeat recorder and we are putting it in a sentimental teddy bear (my DH gave to me when we were 12).
  • The only one I saw that was actually pretty cool was at 8 weeks.  My 8 wk u/s just looked like a blob with a little flicker in it, but it was kind of cool to see a 3D image of an actual little bean baby.

Otherwise, I'm in the creepy camp.  They aren't that awful, I just would never pay the extra money for one, but to each his own...both of my sisters did one for all of their kids, it's just not my thing.
