Toddlers: 24 Months+

Toddler vs twin bed

DS is 2.5 and baby #2 is coming in June. DS still sleeps great in his crib but we will be transitioning him out in the next few months in preparation for #2. For those who have already transitioned do you recommend a toddler bed or a twin bed? I'm kinda torn. My only hesitation on the toddler bed is how long he'll be able to sleep in it since he's a fairly tall kid. Thoughts?

Re: Toddler vs twin bed

  • Toddler beds still use a crib mattress.  I'd go straight to twin and keep the mattress with the crib for the new baby.  We just transitioned to a twin on the floor and it's gone very well.  If he rolls off, it's only 3-4 inches down.  And there's space for us to lay down with him to read stories.

  • Our crib transitions from a crib, to a toddler bed, to a full. If it didn't transition I would have gone straight to a twin with a safety rail. There really is no need for a toddler bed IMO.

  • We transitioned DD to her toddler bed (converted her crib) and used a side rail for two months and then put her in a twin. We just put the mattress on the floor for now. She did awesome. We removed the crib completely and will bring it back when LO is a few months old.

  • Twin. Use rails or pillows if you think he needs the security. This will also emphasize that he's a big kid versus being a baby.

  • My vote is for the twin if those are your options.

We transitioned from a crib to a full size bed for each of our girls (twins) at 14 months.  Transitioned perfectly.  We have had 2 roll offs, but they are minor, and they both slept through it.  They did not sleep great in their cribs, we assume because they have nearly no body fat that the hard mattress was uncomfortable.  The full is plusher and the girls have slept through the night 12 hours straight since 14 months.  We have pillows and sheet, plush blanket and micro-fiber comforter on each bed. Per our pediatrician, he was extremely comfortable with this arrangement, and was actually in favor of it.  For naps, they sleep on top of the comforter with a light blanket.  At night, they climb into their own beds and get under the covers.

For us, transitioning at 14 months was perfect.  There was never an issue of where they slept, they didn't make enough of a connection with their crib at that point to be upset at all.  Now, they climb into bed for naps/sleeping, we shut the door, they go to sleep.  Best decision we could have made.
  • In your situation I would get a twin bed. If you get a toddler bed you'll have to buy another crib size mattress...and then eventually a twin mattress. Just get the twin mattress now and save yourself the money.
