Night terrors/hallucinations?

Hey ladies,

Just checking to see if I'm the only one experiencing these! I feel like I belong in an institution when it happens. Some nights I wake up from a deep sleep and swear that I hear or see things that aren't really there. It takes me 5-10 minutes to decide if its real life or if I'm sleep walking. The worst yet was the other night my husband was out of town and I swore I heard someone breaking in! I jumped up and locked my bedroom door and my heart was pounding. I started looking out my windows like a freak. I turned around to look at my dogs, one is a 220 pound English mastiff so I know he would alert me to trouble and he was passed out snoring. My shih tzu just looked at me like I was bat shit crazy. I then got back in bed and turned on all of the lights and finally fell back asleep. It was a horrible feeling! Could this be hormones? Why would they make you do this!?

  • I'm 18 weeks and never had sickness so never took those meds but I am an anxious person and have struggled with it my whole life. Nothing terrible happened in my life to make me this way, its just in my family- we all have it. I've been on Prozac since age 16 and that helped me immensely with everyday life. During my first trimester I stopped the meds completely but around 13 weeks I started to feel nutty again and my Doctors recommended I go back on a low dose. I'm thinking its time to up my dosage again. I don't want to be selfish but I can't live healthily while feeling crazy. I have an anatomy appointment tomorrow so I will ask about it. Prozac is such a controversial drug- seems like doctors all have different opinions about taking it when pregnant. All 5 of my doctors are on board with it though. I'm just wondering if hormones intensify the crazy.
  • Believe it or not but I had something similar to a night terror in my first trimester and just a few times this trimester.

I would be on the edge of sleep and I would literally bolt awake. Like jump up. It was strange.
  • I've had night terrors most of my life. The thing with them is if it's a real night terror you have no recall of them. It just really freaks your spouse out. I seem to get them more often when I'm stressed or nervous about something. Is there anything you can do to relax before bed?
  • I have slight anxiety, but I have always had nightmares. I noted they were on the decline when I got pregnant, but if they happen, they are BAD. Last night, I had a horrible one that my mom's friend's daughter (17) committed suicide at my moms house. It was a really intense nightmare, and it took me a good part of the morning to shake it off me. It worse because I haven't been so nice to the family friends, due to their using my mother.

I'm like you, OP, I am anxious.  It's just how I was raised and it's my life.  When I'm not preggers, I'm on a nightly, schedule D, anti-anxiety med.  When DH and I first talked about TTC, I talked to my sleep dr (who prescribes my drugs) and got a 2nd consult with a psychiatrist.  Both said that schedule D was of the question, but some schedule Cs are ok during the 2nd trimester.

I've been lucky because I've had very few incidents since getting pregnant.  If it was more severe, I'd be on something.  So, if you count my two doctors plus your five doctors, that is seven doctors who think it's ok to take drugs while pregnant.  It's not like you are doing it because you want to, it's because you need to.

Fingers crossed you get better!  Sometimes hormones can do crazy thing and I'm hoping yours decide to 180 and give you some relaxed sleep.  Try tracking triggers and changing your nighttime routine around to be as relaxing as possible.  For some reason, a nightlight in my bedroom has always helped me, or maybe that's just in my head.  Who knows!  Good luck!

  • I have gotten them my whole life! Nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking/talking etc. I will say they have gotten way worse since becoming pregnant. I've also been known to leap out of bed in terror and hide in bathrooms/closets.

For me it gets worse when I am stressed or anxious, so make sure if that's a possibility that you address it to minimize any potential causes as the stress isn't good for baby.
  • Most of my dreams are very stressful to the point I don't feel well when I wake. For a couple of nights this week, I had dreams DS was dying from allergic reactions.

trust your gut and if you think there is something up, call the doc.

  • I had that today when I was taking a nap. I was half asleep and half awake with my eyes closed and I could of sworn I heard my dad talking (he is like a thousand miles away from me) and opening my bedroom door and I could feel him move the bed. While all of this was happening I wanted to open my eyes but I couldn't. I kept trying and trying and when I finally did open my eyes there was nothing. So strange.
  • I have them. I have thought my house was collapsing and "come to" on my front porch. They are called hypnogogic hallucinations. Check this out.... https://www.americansleeplabs.com/a-sd-hypgh.html

  • I've had intense horrible nightmares this whole pregnancy... I don't sleep well at all on those nights. I woke up in a panic again last night but I always remember my dreams I wake from. I asked my dr and she said it was just hormones... But yours sound worse than mine.

Oh and I'm 25 and will not spend the night by myself and if hubby is on the other side of the house most nights I can't fall asleep unless I leave the light on. I've always been scared of the dark though.
  • I do believe hormones can cause this.  I had terrible hallucinations and nightmares after my son was born.  Lasted for about a week or two.  I remember calling in the nurse at the hospital in the middle of the night and I was crying in tears because the "lights were green" and it meant that I was dying.   Also, shortly after we got home, I fell asleep in bed and woke up screaming for my husband (who was in the living room entertaining visitors) because my stomach looked rotton and all sunken in and black.  I was too terrified to remove the covers, because I didn't want him to see because it was so gross, so he pried them off of me (because he was panicking too at this point), and showed me that all was ok..   I had some pretty wild pregnancy dreams, but nothing of that magnitude.

  • So this is weird...l I just finished reading this post, and then decided to read some of the pregnancy book on my nightstand. 2 seconds into reading about the 2nd tri, I see.... "Strange Dreams.... It's normal to have unusual dreams- especially in the last trimester- that may be vivid and scary. Experts believe these types of dreams may provide a way for your subconscious to cope with any fears and doubts you have about pregnancy and becoming a mother." Had to share. That being said... I have definitely had dreams in the past where I've woken up and thought someone was in our room, or heard something downstairs. Don't know what that's about... But it's very freaky.

  • Look up hypnagogic hallucinations .... It's like dreaming while you're awake... It happens in between stage 1 of sleep and being awake . I've had them since high school. I even went to a therapist bc I thought I was crazy. It's more normal than it sounds
