STM - When to go to the hospital?

(Post whoring it up and it's not even 8 am!)

So, as a FTM I remember some magical formula for when to go the hospital (contractions lasting a minute and less than yadayada minutes apart).

What's the formula for a STM?

I stayed at home for 4 hours and made some pretty good progress in doing so, so I'd love to do the same this time...but I also not planning on a home birth!

Re: STM - When to go to the hospital?

  • Conventional wisdom is that the second baby comes faster than the first, so I definitely plan on getting to the hospital a little sooner than last time (my OB also suggested this). I don't know of any formula though.

  • I think the "rule" is still the same.  contractions 5 minutes apart, lasting for 60 seconds, for an hour.  Or water breaking.

BUT, it is definitely common for second babies to come faster than first ones, so I think I'll be asking my OB toward the end, what they want me to do (especially considering my first came pretty quickly for a first).

  • I don't think that's a silly question at all, I have wondered if my second is more likely to come faster because they will only be about 19 months apart.

  • Last time was pretty quick - I labored at home most of the day until the contractions got consistent and 4 minutes apart.  Checked into the hospital at 11pm, water broke at 1am and baby was born at 2:20am.  If this one goes faster I'm in trouble!

  • A friend of mine had her 2nd last May and literally barely got to the hospital in time.  She had been in a few hours earlier but they sent her home because her labor wasn't "active".  She says looking back, she should have just walked around the hospital grounds or something!  I'm not opposed to that if I think the time is coming!

  • I think it depends a lot on your circumstances...
    - did you have a quick labor before?
    - are you GBS +?
    - do you really want an epi?
    - are you trying to go natural?
    - how far away is your hospital?
    - has your water broken?

  • I was in labor for about 15 hours with my first, but most of it was really manageable and I wasn't even sure I was in labor. My water broke after about 14 hours of labor (about 8 hours in the hospital) and the baby was born about an hour later. As soon as I feel like I am having regular contractions this time I'm booking it to the hospital (and I only live 10 min away). With the baby coming out so shortly after my water breaking (I went from 5-10cm in only about 50 minutes), I can't risk not making it in time!
My parents will be on standby to come over to our house (no matter what time it is) to watch DD and keep her for a couple of days while we're in the hospital.
  • With my first two I threw up during labor around 4-5 cm both times. I think it is just my body's way of preparing to give birth. If I throw up again this time, I will probably use that along with contraction timing to know it is time to go. I also remember when I am unable to do anything but focus and breathe through contractions and turn totally inward, it is probably time to go.
  • My water broke in the middle of the night (4 days before my due date) so I called the doctor and they told me to go in.
  • I forget you can always call l&d and bug them! I need to find that number again! Luckily we're pretty close to the hospital, so maybe I can wait it out for a little bit this time too.

  • When I woke up in the morning last time in pain, I started timing my contain and they were already 3 minutes apart and by the time we got to the hospital an hour later they were only 2 minutes apart! I still didn't have her until 12 hours later though. So I really don't know what I'm supposed to do! Asking the OB and trusting your body sound smart :-)
