Those moms who commute long distances to work and LO goes to DC

How does it work for those who have an hour commute both ways? Do you have LO at DC closer to your work or home? How is the trip in the morning and after work?

Re: Those moms who commute long distances to work and LO goes to DC

  • My commute was only a half hour but the daycare was by work and I would have preferred it to be near home. There were days that I was sick and wanted to take him there while I stayed home but daycare was just too far for that. Also, if it's near home it will cut down on the time that they have to be in the car.

  • I commute an hour.  LO is in an in home daycare close to home.  DH takes him in the morning (I have to leave at 6:30, he doesn't leave until after 8.  I pick him up at around 4:15. I just can't imagine having him in the car for an hour each way to a DC near work.

  • Everyone makes good points, I guess I'm trying to find a way to keep our daycare when we move. We also have the problem that we may both be working that far from home, in a different town in fact, and if we weren't able to make it home there wouldn't be anyone there to take care of her. At least if we're both in the different town I think she'd have to be there with us because of the distance.

  • My commute is anywhere from 45-2hrs each way.   TheBoy's is an hour each way.  E's daycare is 15min from home.

My thoughts - the commute is the most dangerous part of my day, limiting E's exposure to that can't hurt.  If we or she is sick, having daycare close to home limits the sick in car time.  Makes it easy to use daycare as babysitter on days that I take time off.  Allows TheBoy and I to split drop-off/pick-up duties as best works given our individual schedules.

  • My commute is 3 hours (1.5 each way). Right now LO goes to DC in the town that we live. H words in the town so he has close access to her and my IL's live there. We have considered moving halfway between the two cities to cute down on my commute. If we end up doing that she will go to DC where one of us works so that we are close to her.
  • When I was at my previous job the commute was a hour and Frankie came to work with me. I ended up having to let him watch Elmo on the kindle on the way home. He was just so tired by the end of the day he would either cry all the way home, or fall asleep and then once we got home it was 7, he ate dinner, bath and then bed. I hated it.

  • Thanks for your insight ladies, there are really things I didn't think of here. I guess now we really need to find her a new daycare in the new town. Hello anxiety! 8-}  :-S  :((

  • Jack goes to one close to home for a couple of reasons...
    1) I work in a couple of different sites so what might be close one day would be another hour away on another day.

    2) Even if Jack gets sick and I can't get to him (and someone else has to go collect him) it's close to home so he wouldn't have to travel far before being in a "comfortable" environment.

    3) He can do long car rides but sometimes at the end of the day he isn't interested in getting in his car seat at all (it has taken more than 45 minutes sometimes). So I like that I can walk 5 minutes to get him, and 5-10 minutes to walk home (depending on if he wants to walk by himself or wants to be carried).
