Tips to Alleviate Arch/Foot Pain?

Hi ladies, Sometime yesterday I must have done something to my foot because the arch area of my right foot is hurting something fierce. Like it's horribly bruised. I can barely walk on it and the pain is getting worse. I don't even know if it's pregnancy related? Google says "over pronation" can be pregnancy related. I have a doctor appointment Monday but I have no idea how to fix this until then. Anybody else have this? What has helped you?

Re: Tips to Alleviate Arch/Foot Pain?

  • Sounds dumb but a friend of mine with plantar pain suggested using a single strand of athletic support tape in the middle of the arch when I had some pain in my arch. It helped a lot I used it for about a week during culinary school finals when we were on our feet for 16 hours a day. HTH

  • I have been having the chiro adjust my feet/ankles when I go in too. It sounds dumb but I feel a million times better after.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I have a pair of really good inserts that feel great. My arches are very high. I haven't brought it up to my doctor or anything to confirm but my arches have started feeling weaker as the pregnancy goes on. It makes sense to me since all of your ligaments loosen over the pregnancy.

Is it a tight feeling? I had a ton of arch pain playing sports and the trainers had me roll my foot/arch on a baseball or lacrosse ball. I also froze water in a small Gatorade cup, peeled off the top of the cup and iced my arch. May not be what you are going through, but arch pain is the pits!
This exactly.  I was having pretty serious arch pain before I was pregnant.  As weird as this sounds, we have a piece of pvc pipe that we use for rolling out our muscles and i used it on my arch.  It hurt like hell but once those tendons were stretched out it felt much better.

This!  My chiropractor recommends this when my feet were hurting when I was training for a marathon.

I don't know if it's tight, honestly. I can't feel much beyond the pain. It feels like I stepped on a nail or something in the middle of my foot. I will try icing - and some of these stretches!

  • I have fallen arches, and if I wear either high heels and/or flat shoes with no arch support, I get sore feet and what seems like tendonitis on the top of my feet at the base of my toes. Using arch supports in everything I can, and making sure I don't wear low-support shoes more than 2-3 days in a row keeps it under control for me. I had to get inserts even for my rain boots.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • I highly recommend custom orthotics. I have them in my work shoes and they make a world of difference. They were covered by my insurance too!

  • Over the summer I messed up my foot and it felt like I had steped on a nail/something completely poped out of place. Ice, stay off the foot, try to relax it massage if possible and an arch support is the only thing that helped.
I was working at a summer camp so it took me 4 days (of hiking) before I saw a doctor. I had messed up a tendon but was able to get everything put back together. With all my joints getting loser furring pregnancy I have to wear my arch support all the time.

Hope you get it fixed soon and it starts to feel better.
  • Like PPs said, you may want to try shoe inserts. I believe the kind I have in my shoes are called "Beats." They are a huge help with my lower back and knee pain. My arches aren't good and I should really be wearing inserts in all of my shoes. I think my inserts cost around $100 (well worth it in my case), but you may be able to try some cheaper inserts from the grocery store (maybe like Dr. Scholl's??) just to see if you get any relief before investing in expensive inserts.

  • I have really high arches. When I have problems, I use a frozen bottle of water and roll my foot over it. Similar to the cup, but the bottle works really well for me.

  • Kinesio Tape works amazing. Or you can wet a tennis ball and freeze it. Remove from freezer after a few hours and roll your arch around on it. I shattered my foot a few years ago and part of my rehab was working on my insanely high arches. It felt great. I just sat in a chair and rolled my arch around on the frozen tennis ball.

  • If your pronating when you walk I would get a shoe that corrects it. I personally have never found an expensive insert which could do as much for me as an orthotic shoe... Put I've got extremely effed up feet from years of cross country and improper (read:nonexistent) foot stretching. Orthotic shoes are expensive but worth it IMO. Also google toe crunch asana for a nice yogi foot stretch. Hope that helps!

  • DH was over pronating and he got some shoes that helped. I also got some really nice inserts and that helped my foot pain. Sometimes flex spending can be used on inserts.
