Blood or Second Baby

I had my first ultrasound today. They saw one baby with a heartbeat (116), measuring 6w3d. Plus they saw another sac that was either just blood or a second baby. They had a hard time getting a good picture based on the placement. I go back next week for another ultrasound. Has anyone has had this happen? image

Re: Blood or Second Baby

  • My twins are in different sacs and the sacs were side by side via abdominal and vaginal ultrasound. I don't know much about overlapping sacs like that but good luck.

  • Hard to say because this looks a lot like my singleton baby's when I has a SCB. But my twins at the point in gestation only one heart beat but two sacs and an obvious fetal pole. Was the sac empty completely? To me it looks like a SCB from implantation but it could go either way.

  • I'm going to guess blood.  Two sacs aren't usually overlapping like that.  Good luck next week!

  • I would guess it's just one baby.  At 6 weeks I clearly saw two sacs, saw/heard heartbeats and all that.  What cycle day did you do your betas?  Those look more like singleton numbers.... with my son I was 130 on 12dp5dt but with the twins 12 days past it was 1327 and my second one was 3,000 something.

Two sacs can absolutely over lap... they nearly didn't find Simon during my 6w ultrasound because he was hidden "behind" James bubble.. By 9w, they looked like this:

BUT - if they could not find a fetal pole or a sac, it is probably just blood. I hope you get a better answer during your next scan.

  • When I went in at 5w4days the tech found two sacs My doctor was pretty sure it was either a blood clot or a vanishing twin; to her it didn't look like the second sac was developing.  When we went back at 10 weeks we got a big surprise, there were two happy and healthy babies.  You'll probably have to wait until your next appointment to know for sure. Good luck!

  • Betas have nothing to do with how many babies are in there... It just simply means you are pregnant and that it's progressing.

  • Heck, my twins were in the same sac (different amniotics sacs, but same gestational sac), and they almost missed the second baby at the 6 week u/s.  I can't read your u/s any better than your doc, so I guess you'll have to wait and see (frustrating, I know!).  I didn't have any other sacs to interpret for my early u/s's.

  • My first ultrasound showed one sac with another area that looked like a collection of fluid. The next ultrasound showed that is was a second sac, just behind in growth. Good luck!
